What Could Go Wrong
-------------------

Smaller bugs could interrupt people's workflows.

Hello Jeremy, or anyone else affected,

Accepted mutter into lunar-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/44.1-0ubuntu1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-lunar to verification-done-lunar. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed-lunar. In either case, without details of your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s) fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in -proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

While the discussion about the test plan is ongoing https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/scope-of-gnome-mru/18041/58 I'm happy to accept this with the currently documented test plan and the test plans on all the associated bugs.

I installed mutter 44.1 and gnome-shell 44.1 from proposed, and a few of other related dependencies. I don't have everything at 44.1, I don't know if we should expect more gnome-related updates in lunar-proposed. For example, I have

gnome-shell-extension-prefs 44.1-0ubuntu1

but gnome-shell-extensions is at 44.0-1

Anyway, I wanted to report that I'm now seeing artifacts around window borders, when they are arranged to occupy all available area. I should note I'm also using gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-tiling-assistant 39-3ubuntu2.

I'll attach some screenshots of what I'm seeing. Perhaps a video recording too, as the artifacts change depending on which window is selected.

Turns out I'm only seeing it with google-chrome. Tried firefox, and a terminal, using the same reproducer, and it didn´t happen.

Andreas Hasenack (ahasenack) wrote :

The artifact at the border also happens across monitors. The tall chrome window on the right of the left monitor interferes with the windows aligned to the left of the right monitor.

This happened immediately after updating mutter and gnome shell to 44.1, it wasn't happening before.

Also happens with chromium (the snap).

Confirmed that after install of libmutter-12-0 v44.1-0ubuntu1 from lunar-proposed on ubuntu budgie no additional regressions were noted. Tested standard stuff like window switching/max/min, tiling etc.

Independently team member Jacob has also confirmed that the same version does not additionally impacted his setup

Note - I tried to reproduce the artefact issue Andreas noted above with google chrome on ubuntu budgie + this new version but was unable to.

I installed mutter 44.1-0ubuntu1 on Ubuntu 23.04 and successfully completed the Test Case with the GNOME Classic, GNOME, Ubuntu, and Ubuntu on Xorg sessions.

We landed the gtk4 fix all the way to lunar-updates (and fully phased) that Andreas had mentioned earlier with the rectangle artifacts along the window borders so there is no regression there.

While I tested mutter 44.1 with and without the corresponding gnome-shell 44.1 update and did not see any issue having a newer mutter than gnome-shell, I recommend that both be landed together. gnome-shell 44.1 depends on mutter 44.1 but I did not add breaks to enforce the upgrade the opposite direction also. GNOME upstream assumes that mutter and gnome-shell are upgraded together.
