Bug Description

Binary package hint: xaos

When I open XaoS In Virtualbox (Hardy Alpha 6), I can't see colors, all is monochromatic (black and white) and there is a problem with Xaos window background itself.
See screenshot.

Please also install xaos 3.2-9ubuntu1~tormod3 from my PPA https://edge.launchpad.net/~tormodvolden/+archive. When you start this version of xaos from the command line, it will spit out a few messages about visual matching which you can paste in here.

Using package from your ppa seems to work. (see screenshot)

It gives:
Got Visual match for TrueColor depth 24

Thanks for testing. If my version works, the new 3.2-6ubuntu2 in Hardy should also work.

Great.
Thank you indeed.

What about Bug #192882?
It is more critical than this one because affects 'real' Hardy (not
virtual).

The workaround in 3.2-6ubuntu2 fixes both this bug and the one in 192882.

Nice.

I tried to install it on Gutsy, but it gives me dependency problem with
libc6 (because it's for Hardy obviously)
Is there a plan to be backported into Gutsy?

Since there is an easy workaround (run with: XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 xaos) I am not sure if it's urgent enough for SRU. Anyway, I can build it for Gutsy in my PPA so that you can get it there.

I asked you about it just for this reason, because there is an easy
workaround, so I think it shouldn't be much work to do to have it
backported.

I can use it running with the workaround, no problem for me, but I think
that backport could help a lot all newbies using Ubuntu.
Thanks a lot anyway.

Yes, I agree. If it was only up to me... In Ubuntu we have "backports" but that's for new features and not for bugfixes. Then we have the SRU (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates) which follow a strict procedure.

BTW, I have uploaded Gutsy builds to my PPA now.

Thank you for explaining.

Looking at SRU procedure I read this as example of bugs:

Bugs which do not fit under above categories, but (1) have an obviously safe
patch and (2) affect an application rather than critical infrastructure
packages (like X.org or the kernel).

I think the bug fits this description. Do you agree?

Anyway thank you very much for Gutsy build.

Yes, I think this could fit that SRU category.

I have also submitted the patch upstream. Maybe it will be included in the upcoming 3.3 release, which we then can try to get into gutsy-backports.
