Bug Description

[Impact]

To whom it may concern:

I was experiencing frequent wake-ups from s0i3x on a HP Pro 435 G9 convertible [1] using the Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 Soc [2]. The issue is related to FW revision WLAN.HSP.1.1-03125-QCAHSPSWPL_V1_V2_SILICONZ_LITE-3.6510.9 that comes bundled with Ubuntu 22.10.

It appears the SoC increasingly triggering  wake-ups after being suspended for approx. 4 hrs.

Read the full story at [4].

The solution is to upgrade SoC firmware to rev WLAN.HSP.1.1-03125-QCAHSPSWPL_V1_V2_SILICONZ_LITE-3.6510.23/ [3]

[4] https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2377

[Fix]

Upgrade firmware, as mentioned above.

[Test case]

Verify WiFi functionality on WCN6855 works and that unplugging power cord during suspend doesn't wake system.

[Where Problems might occur]

It's firmware, what could possibly go wrong? If so, connectivity issues wit ath11k based NICs.

no longer affects: alsa-driver (Ubuntu)

Just a little extra context for this.

Some systems this manifests as described because they don't use _BTP for notifying when battery has crossed a critical threshold but instead notify the OS of every battery level change.

Systems that use _BTP still will have the issue manifest with other ACPI events that shouldn't wake the system such as unplugging power adapter or closing lid.

Although you reported this on Kinetic it affects all the supported Ubuntu releases. I've added tasks for the others as well.

Hi Mario,

This is exactly what I was thinking of when reviewing the timing of
wakeup events occurring on my system. My first assumption was like
this:
1. system fw check battery actual charging level, target charging
level and charging rate
2. system fw compute compute estimated arrival at target charging level
3. sleep until arrival at charging level
4. wake up
5. goto 1

Such an approach will eventually converge to "oszillate" around target
charging level which can be proved by the systems wake up logs.

Anyway, I still don't get why upgrading the wifi-cards firmware to a
more recent version fixes the problem.

Would you mind to elaborate on this a bit more?

Thanks,
Carsten

When the system is in the hardware sleep state it can be woken up from either a GPIO or a GPE. Any of those ACPI events I mentioned will make the EC trigger such a wakeup. When the kernel wakes up it will process the ACPI events and then confirm whether there are any remaining interrupts active.

* If no interrupts are active, the system will enter back into hardware sleep state.
* If any interrupts are still active then the kernel treats it as a genuine wakeup source that should exit the s2idle loop.

What happens with this bug is that the WLAN controller is connected to a design specific GPIO, and when the system leaves hardware sleep state that GPIO is also triggered.

This means that two interrupts are active: 1 for that GPIO and 1 for the EC SCI. The firmware update for the WLAN controller fixes it so that the GPIO is not active during resume.

I confirmed that unplugging the power adapter over suspend doesn't wake the system now.
