Nope. I can reproduce the error on a brand new installed hardy alpha6 inside a vm.

Come to think of it, this may be related to the german localization of GDM.

I wanted to see if I can change the localization in gdmsetup, because I noticed it hadn't been updated to english even though I changed the system's standard language from german to english.

Nope. Setting the language to english

$ sudo LANGUAGE=C gdmsetup
gdmsetup[18534]: CRITICAL: Error opening file: No such file or directory
gdmsetup[18534]: CRITICAL: Error opening file: No such file or directory
gdmsetup[18534]: CRITICAL: Error opening file: No such file or directory

....

shows the same problems.

I know, but try changing your system's default language to english – GDM will stay german (after a reboot).

I don't know if it's related, just a guess. But that would explain why others do not encounter this problem.

You are right. After i copied my gtk-bookmarks to /root

$ sudo cp ~/.gtk-bookmarks /root/

Those error messages are gone.

I can also reproduce this bug on Hardy Beta. The first time gdmsetup is started after a fresh installation, the computer shows a bunch of identical errors (like described previously), the hard drive is repetitively spinning and gdmsetup is still not started after 3 minutes waiting. This only happens the first time gdmsetup is started on the computer, once the computer rebooted and that you try to open gdmsetup again, it will now open correctly but still shows the same errors on terminal. I reproduced this problem at least three time with different alpha and with the actual beta, always after a clean install.

According to the fact that this bug cause gdmsetup/libgnomeui to spin the hard drive apparently indefinitively and that gdmsetup does not open the first time, I raise the importance to medium. This bug might affect a lot of people since it is not hardware specific but this is not a crasher bug.

no, this bug doesn't create delay or disk spinning, there is just warning displayed for every fileselector widget

Sebastien Bacher : I'm pretty sure of what I just described and I reproduced this in two computers multiple times, amd64 and i386 with alpha and beta, but you have to open gdmsetup for the very first time on a freshly installed system to reproduce it. Same errors appears and gdmsetup does not open until the computer is rebooted. If you suspect this to be a separate bug, I can open a new bug report.

could you create an empty .gtk-bookmarks and see if you get the issue? that doesn't really make sense that you get the issue on first boot and not after, there is not difference between those

I also received this error. Upon deleting ~/.gtk-bookmarks, gdmsetup seems to work normally, though the errors below still persist:

Version: Hardy Beta
Localization: English

Any information I can provide to try to debug this issue?

I can't confirm the delay for hardy beta1, but i *know* that i had the problem too. Opening gdmsetup took a couple of minutes with high load and high disc activity. I tried the beta1 and it looks ok (except that there are still those error messages).

Sebastian Bacher : It does not matter if you start gdmsetup the first time Hardy is booted, but it will always happen the first time gdmsetup is launched in Hardy. This is not reproducible inside the LiveCD for me. I reproduced this behavior today in Hardy beta 1, cleanly installed in VirtualBox.

Error appears in terminal, hard drive is spining, gdmsetup takes around 5 minutes to open, top chrono. This time, rebooting and/or opening gdmsetup multiple times does not fix anything. Updating Hardy with all latest updates does not fix the issue either. Removing ~/.gtk-bookmarks did not change anything too. All issues persists.

I too have problems running gdmsetup. When I run it, there is constant disk activity, but no gdmsetup shows up. Killing gdmsetup does not seem to stop the disk activity. Only rebooting does.

The hard disk activity sounds so intense that I didn't dare wait 5 minutes or whatever for gdmsetup to show up.

In my case, running gdmsetup from the terminal does not produce *any* error messages.
