Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

There is no useful information other than FF3 beta 3 crashes randomly in Hardy when watching YouTube videos. The problem seems to be that the Flash player is crashing Firefox. Ubuntu probably cannot support this bug directly, but it has to be fixed one way or another before Hardy is released or Firefox will be unusable.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report didn't yield the required information. Please go ahead and submit a new crash report if it crashed again with the latest available package. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Ok ... I'm not really sure what happened, but I'm not experiencing the crash anymore.

What I noticed was:
- sometimes the video would start playing, but would stop after a few seconds. I could try to forward the the video, but it would never play through.
- it was not limited to YouTube, a couple of other Flash-players I tested had the same problem
- I had the idea it was limited to video playback in Flash; other Flash movies (e.g. ads or simulations) didn't seem to be affected. Haven't tested this much, though.

For what it's worth, here are the steps I took after this crash (which somehow fixed the problem for me):
- reinstalled nvidia driver v169.12 from nVidia website (since restricted driver is linked to 386 kernel which breaks my USB audio)
- selected Pulse Audio Sound Server in Sound Preferences since ALSA didn't seem to handle multiple audio playbacks (e.g. a video in Firefox and Exaile! playing at the same time) very well. I didn't have this problem in Gutsy, btw. Oh, and I'm using the Bose Companion 5 USB audio (which is now working perfectly - thanks!)
- Maybe nice to know: I've upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy (so no clean install)

Good luck finding the bug and keep up the good work!

I just noticed something interesting. I use VirtualBox (1.5.6) for my unavoidable WinXP activities, and suddenly noticed that I couldn't play any Flash videos in Firefox. Just like before, it was playing a few seconds and then stopping (with no sound whatsoever). After checking the Audio settings in VirtualBox I saw it was set to ALSA; setting it to PulseAudio solved it immediately.

No idea if it can cause crashes, but interesting nonetheless.

Unsure. I'll install it and get back to you.

The you tube crash is occurring on Gutsy with the latest Firefox 2 also, the problem has been demonstrated on you tube also (search for Firefox crash playing youTube video), most of them are on Feisty, seem an ongoing problem.

I experienced the same problem... the video started to play but a few seconds later stopped. I was able to forward it, replay again and again stopped after a few seconds...

I have ATI (Hardy Heron) ... so I tried to use Pulse Audio and it works correctly now.
