Bug Description

The file concerned is one I downloaded in MP3 format and I like to convert such files to flac for use in my music library. Normally this happens without problems and I've been doing this for 2 or more years and must have converted hundreds of files in that time. I notice however that sometimes soundconvertor won't work when I ask it to put the files in a new directory but leaves a set of half-finished files in the source directory - well I can get round this by coping he source file to the new directory first so no problem. However nothing works with this particular file, which is the third track of an eighttrack akbum McCoy Tyner New York Reunion. I downloaded the entire album as a zip file. My version of Linux is Ubunto 20-204 LTS and SoundConvertor 3.0.2. Sorry, don't have the faintest idea how to launch soundconvertor with -debug - tried using terminal but no joy. The output file is suffixed "-805683-SC-". tHE FILE CONCERNED IS 19.5mB LONG - happy to send it to you if needed. Thanks

Ok - while filling in the above I had a sudden brainwave - what if the -SC- file is in fact a flac but not renamed? Well, I tried renaming it myself and it now works fine. Still a bug though, I think but no longer a problem for me. The file is maybe a bit larger than I'd expect for it's time (8:03 - 54.05 MB) as against a file from the same album (9:13 - 54.03MB) but I think I can live with that

The -SC- files are indeed temporary files used during conversion.

I could check the original MP3 files that caused the problem if you send it to me (gautier at soundconverter.org).

And also note that converting an MP3 to FLAC makes little sense as you are converting from an already quality-degraded format.

Thank you for reporting the issue,

Hi Gautier

Thanks for the prompt reply, and my apologies for not getting back to
you sooner. Well, much as i suspected might happen the file now (as of
today) converts perfectly - rather think you might be wasting your time
to try and chase this one down, in my days in the support chair I'd
probably mark this one as fixed. I'd attach a copy of the file for you
if I could, but it's quite large (18.6MB) and while I know it's possible
to send such large files I don't know how.

Take your comments re mp3 to flac conversions. Yes, the conversion can't
possibly add missing detail to the mp3 file, but I do find the result is
smoother and more spacious, and pleasanter to listen to than the mp3.
Anyway, you've got me intrigued so I've resolved to do a comparison
between an mp3, a conversion, and a native flac of the same song to see
what the differences are. You may yet convert me to buying flac instead
of mp3, which will be a strain on the finances but probably worthwhile.
As the saying goes, the prices is soon forgotten while the quality is
long remembered

Best regards

Tina
