Bug Description

Hello, I'm trying to connect Hikvision DS-U02 USB Webcam. It worked for once after trying multiple times, then it stopped working again. It worked when I connected it to a USB 2.0 port and now it's not working there as well. The device is showing up in lsbsb and dmseg, but not showing in "v4l2-ctl --list-devices".

error in dmesg:

This also happened to me in 20.04, but only sometimes. After moving to a new computer and installing 22.04 on that, my DS-U02 wouldn't work at all. This is what `sudo dmesg` brings up whenever it's plugged in.

[ 238.642588] usb 1-3: Failed to query (GET_DEF) UVC control 11 on unit 1: -32 (exp. 2).

The UVC error varies with every reconnect but, this is the most common one to pop up.

Edit: It also likes to end up spitting the error "Failed to initialize the device".

This happened to me on 18.04 and 20.04 both. I am seeing similar logs to the previous comments and one major problem is that the laptop would not even boot up if the webcam is plugged in. It gets stuck at boot time and until I remove the webcam, it keeps stuck in the same black screen.

If I keep it plugged and it doesn't respond, the entire system gets stuck until I remove it.

I am using the a Hikvision U12 Full HD 1080P USB Webcam

Update: It was the issue with the webcam firmware, I contacted Hikvision
and they were not able to fix it. I returned it and bought different webcam
from Logitech.

Moral of the story: Don't buy Hikvision webcams if you're a Linux user. They work just fine on Windows and Mac systems. I really can't believe a webcam can freeze the entire system including in-browser applications. Hikvision states that their webcams are compatible with Linux but, I'll be the judge of that.
