Hi there,
This seems to be related to Xrandr failing.
Deleting /usr/lib/
ii gnome-settings-
ii x11-xserver-utils 7.3+2 X server utilities
Another symptom of the problem is this:
efti@valkyrie:~$ xrandr
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 151 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 6 ()
Serial number of failed request: 9
Current serial number in output stream: 9
Cheers,

I had this problem every time i tried to use the restricted nvidia drivers. This problem went away after I removed xserver-xgl from my system. As far as I can see installing the nvidia-glx-new drivers should probably automatically remove the xserver-xgl package if it's installed. but i am no expert.

Could this be simply an incompatibility between the xrandr library and
xserver-xgl? Can anyone using Xgl without an NVIDIA card (ATI,
whatever) confirm or deny it?

I had this problem every time i tried to use the restricted nvidia

probably automatically remove the xserver-xgl package if it's installed.
but i am no expert.
