[HARDY] Wireless Ethernet (ath0) not working

Bug #197344 reported by uncloned
10
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
network-manager (Ubuntu)
Invalid
Undecided
Unassigned

Bug Description

Wireless connection does not show up in network manager

This is the same USB Flash Drive installation where the update manger didn't install
I can 't follow the instructions to fix the upgrade manager because I can't get on line.
The install is usable locally but of course can not get out to the internet
(going wired is not a convenient option but looks to be possible)

If someone could tell me what file to find from the installation I will grab it off the drive and upload it.

I am running Hardy on a Acer Aspire 5102WLMi laptop - and writing this from the same laptop running Gutsy

Could you follow https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingHardwareDetection and give us some information about your system?

If you need help getting information off your system try asking a question on the support tracker.

If both your partitions are on the same laptop then you should be able access hardy config files from gutsy.

Hi Caroline - is there an entry for this bug I should go to?

OK - please remember that the problem is with a HARDY installation - not GUTSY which was used to generate these files

The HARDY installation can not talk to the out side world.

If you need a file off of the HARDY installation please specify which one and I will get it

We're only interested in files from one that doesn't work. Are the
files you've attached from the working gutsy?

If they are two partitions on the same machine you should be able to
mount the hardy partition in gutsy and access the config files that
way.

Hi Caroline

The instructions that I saw only had me capture the commands run on a
terminal.
If you want me to append filed from the HARDY installation that's fine.
Please tell me what files you want.

Otherwise to do as instructed with HARDY I will have to boot into HARDY and
run the commands.
Of course that will mean booting back into Gutsy to send them.

I can do it once my FTP transfer is over in a few minutes

I installed Hardy Alpha 6. While booting with the newest kernel (2.6.24-12) the wireless card (atheros AR5211) is not present, although listed in lspci. While booting with the kernel 2.6.22 the network card is present but I cannot connect to the wireless network. With Gutsy all works fine.
The wireless network is an WPA-Personal, TKIP.

what on earth do you expect the users to do?

frankly, problems with ubuntu studio wireless and then problems with running
any audio authoring app in regular ubuntu and then then these past issues
with wireless is just making me throw in the towel on ubuntu.

and its not that I did not try... I did, and I liked 7.10 - but why did
wireless get broken? it is not as if wireles is an obscure piece of hardware

it makes little sense to me..... and as an end user it is quite frustrating.
I really went out of my way to provide support information and yours, some 8
months later is the final response...

Chris, I understand that there are many problem whiyh are very frustrating and, believe me, I didn't want to frustrate you even more; but there are currently about 50.000 bugs which all need someone to look at them and with each new release there are many bugs that gets fixed. Therefore we need to make sure that bugs related to one release of Ubuntu are still applicable to new releases, or - if not - specific packages can be backported to old releases.

Since not everyone has the hardware to test bugs concerning (for example) wireless networking, we have to ask in the bug report and are usually closing the bug after a month of no reply, as it happened here.

Again, I really don't want to frustrate anyone. It's just that we need to validate bugs after new releases. There is nothing wrong with reopening a bug if a problem persists.

Thanks.

Yes, I understand all that.... but this is a month shy of a year later for
something as basic as wireless.

And something else....

Setting up sound for a rosegarden like application in Vista is difficult
In Ubuntu it is a nightmare.... I've spent hours and hours trying to get it
to work - and when I resort to installing Ubuntu studio - it does not
support wireless and the interface... to me.... sucks.

You know - I'm all for promotion of Linux - but its hard to be out there
promoting Linux when basic stuff like wireless and sound is difficult as
hell (I got rosegarden to actually make a sound once.. and never again)

Perhaps this is a bridge too far for you guys?

The standard desktop functions nicely but perhaps one should concentrate on
the basics instead of Compiz....
