Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

If you fullscreen totem while watching a video file and let it play until it's over (it has to end while fullscreened) then you won't be able to exit fullscreen.

Totem DOES temporarily exit fullscreen (for 50... maybe 100 milliseconds) and then pop back to fullscreen again. You have to <Alt><F4> or xkill to close it.

Once totem has entered this condition it remains that way regardless of playlist... starting another file from nautilus (if you have a dual monitor setup or you <alt><tab>)

no errors are printed to stout except for:
"sh: jackd: not found"

which is printed to stout on startup... and when each video file is started

hope this helps you sold a VERY annoying bug... good luck!

Works here with totem-gstreamer (ubuntu 7.10). After the end of the file i can leave fullscreen with the "f" key or by moving the mouse and then pressing the "leave fullscreen" button.

Tried here with .wmv and .avi files.

I used the Screens and graphics utility to auto-generate my xorg.conf. I'm pretty certain it's using Xinerama (this may be the root of the problem)

The xorg.conf is attached

I agree that this bug has to do with Xinerama.

I also have this problem. To reproduce I used Hardy and Gutsy. I am using GeForce 9600 GT with the proprietary driver, Compiz is on.

Do someone already have a workaround? Did someone report this to Gnome?

PS: Screenshot is attached. I just started the video from nautilus.

I seem to have run in to this bug on a hardy installation, no nvidia present (intel graphics).

Every time I start totem, it automatically goes to fullscreen, and I cannot get it to leave fullscreen by any means.

I have the same bug on Hardy. Using single monitor. NVidia driver version 177.
Clicking the "Leave Full Screen" button does nothing except make the button react as normal.
In the view menu, the "full screen" option is greyed out.
This happens as soon as you either open Totem from Applications/Sound & Video/Movie Player or if you double click on any video file.

I have applied allways on top and fullscreen. Does that help?

As of today, November 7th, 2008, I have been experiencing this bug for four days now. I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (amd64) and the current kernel (2.6.27-7-generic). My graphics hardware is a nVidia GeForce 8600 GT running version 177 of the nVidia binary driver. I also have a dual monitor setup with a 1280x1024 monitor on the left of a 1440x900 monitor, and I am using xinearama.

I am not certain as to what has started this bug however it seems to be happening over a wide range of Ubuntu systems (7.10 through 8.10).

In addition to the description reported by others experiencing this issue I would like to note that the other hotkeys for totem still work. Also running totem from the command line yields one bit of relevant output that I think may help tracedown the root cause of this bug. I get the following warning:

** (totem:10025): CRITICAL **: bacon_video_widget_set_fullscreen: assertion `bvw != NULL' failed

Doing a bit of research I was able to find a workaround which works. I found that deleting the ~/.config/totem/state.ini file will then reinitialize totem's state and it should open up all subsequent files properly. This worked for me and I was able to open files and successfully switch between full screen and windowed mode without issue. I hope this is able to help others experiencing this issue.

have the same issue, and its stuck, no matter how much i try to "alt+f4" , everytime i start it up, its stuck in full screen mode, and the rightclick>fullscreen is greyed out, and the "leave fullscreen" is not working,

the solution was to delete the file ~/.config/totem/state.ini

i attached the file i deleted

malaeum (malaeum) wrote : Re: [Bug 197038] Re: totem can't leave fullscreen

I am not certain exactly how to reproduce it, however I think it has to do
with some combination of switching between fullscreen and normal mode and
also toggling the display of the controls (I specifically use they shortcut
ctrl+h). I am able to do both and have them function as expected right now.
However I did just experience this again about an hour ago (my second time).
If I am able to pinpoint exactly what I am doing when this happens I will be
certain to post it.

Stefan Goldmann (ingo-knietow) wrote :

Have you ever taken a look into ~./config/totem/state.ini ?

Normally, it looks like this:
[State]
window_w=800
window_h=600
show_sidebar=false
maximised=false
sidebar_w=206
sidebar_page=properties

where window_w and window_h seem to refer to the window's size WITHOUT window decorations.

However, when the bug occurs, "window_w" and "window_h" are set to the screen's full resolution, but still with "maximised=false". Therefore, the program does NOT (re)start into fullscreen mode, but is simply to large to display the decorations. This, in consequence, prevents us from resizing the window to an appropriate size.

Anyway ... deleting the file still solves the problem. ;-)
