Bug Description

While testing daily images of Ubuntu MATE Jammy, update-notifier informed me that Ubuntu Pro is available and if I would like to enable it.

I assume this is a mistake and shouldn't be presented on community flavours? :-)

the flavor users still use the ubuntu archive and would benefit from extended security for their OS no? or is the way it's presented which isn't adapted?

we can easily make that notification display only in Ubuntu session if that's what you want though but I would like to confirm first it's not some misunderstanding

one technical bug though is that currently the action calls to software-properties-gtk so we should only display if that is installed

I didn't think that Ubuntu Pro was a service being officially extended to flavours? This is why I thought the notification might be a mistake.

If I add the following gschema override, it prevents the notification from appearing on Ubuntu MATE.

```
[com.ubuntu.update-notifier:MATE]
notify-ubuntu-advantage-available=false
```

I wait to hear from you if the Ubuntu Pro notification was intended to be presented on flavours.

I'm going to assign myself that bug to fix at least the 'don't display if software-properties isn't installed'

Since Ubuntu Pro hasn't been launched yet it's a bit unclear to me if it's meant to be available to flavor, I will get that question answered

Seb,

  whether it is advantageous for favours I can't really say - all I can see on https://ubuntu.com is ubuntu pro for AWS and Azure.

  I fail to see the immediate relevance for community flavours where desktop/laptop based flavours are asked to support their key packages typically for 3 years (for an LTS). How does Ubuntu Pro help here with the wider archive all flavours use?

Obviously not really a discussion point for launchpad - if its covered on discourse together with the relevance for flavours etc then please do advise.

We (Ubuntu Budgie) do have software-properties-gtk installed - so maybe that criteria needs to be tweaked for whether the notification to be displayed?

Alright, so after discussion we will change the gsettings key to be false and override to true for ubuntu sessions, that gives an easy way for any flavor to opt in by doing the same if they want

The timing there and the fact that the service hasn't been announced yet is a bit unfortunate. The issue raised there is addressed now by an upload which change the default. Ubuntu Pro will make sense for desktop users including services as livepatch and ubuntu advantage applications which provides extended support for the archive include universe but that's another discussion, probably better placed on discourse one the service is launched

This bug was fixed in the package update-notifier - 3.192.51

---------------
update-notifier (3.192.51) jammy; urgency=medium

  * src/ubuntu-advantage.c:
    - set a default action to the ubuntu pro notification since just
      dismissing on click can be confusing (lp: #1960453)
  * data/com.ubuntu.update-notifier.gschema.xml.in:
    - default to not display Ubuntu Pro notifications and let flavors
      opt in if they want it indeed, we will enable it for the Ubuntu
      session by an override in ubuntu-settings (lp: #1962009)
