Bug Description

When booting the system, sometimes the system freezes (HP logo, Ubuntu logo and stopped rotating symbol), and can't do anything not even ping the system.
After zero or a few re-try's I get to the login screen.
It is then possible to log in via ssh from another system. Everything looks OK.
Then I can select the user give her password and then one of two things happens.
one: Ubuntu starts and works OK.
two: the system freezes (black screen) and nothing works not even the ssh session.
I've tried looking at syslog and other files, but can't make any sense of it.
I also attached the last lines of the syslog wich ended in a crash/hangup.

Thanks for the bug report.

I can see two problems here, though am not sure if either is the main issue:

* Timeout, server 21.0.0.52 not responding. Whatever that is, if it's a server the machine depends on then it might cause a startup failure.

* CurrentDmesg.txt seems to suggest file system corruption on /dev/sdb1. If that's something the machine depends on then it might cause a startup failure.

summary: - Xorg freeze
+ System freeze
affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → ubuntu

ps: the booting problem (black screen) also occurs when the system is somewhere on the road, not connected to any network.

/dev/sdb1 is an external usb disk which should not interfere. It could be half connected or some other problem. I'll do an fsck on it

Thanks for that. Next:

1. Reboot and reproduce the system freeze again.

2. Next time you are able to log in please run:

In the original post I've added the last lines of the syslog which came to me with ssh. The last lines did not even make it to the disk. After the user starts at the welcome screen on Jan 22 10:31:03 the system halts at Jan 22 10:31:10.

Yesterday (20220215) the system booted without any problem. Today I tried to reproduce the problem. After five times rebooting without problems I looked at the /var/log/apt/history.log and found the latest upgrade:

Perhaps the problem is solved with one of the patches?

The log in comment #7 seems to end frozen without any new messages indeed. Maybe try waiting 10 seconds between the freeze and rebooting before collecting another log.

I'm guessing the culprit is the Nvidia driver but we need more information.

After the system had operated for some hours, I stopped the system by using the menu 'Power Off'.
It stopped neatly. Then after a minute I started the system again, but it failed. A hard reset (4 sec power-button) was necessary. Then wait 15 sec and restart the system. The system started without a problem. And here is the journalctl output.

now the system start neatly without any problems.
Thanks for your time. I am glad there are people like you who try to help
others. :-)
