Bug Description

Starting today my laptop will not wake up from suspend no matter what I try. After closing my laptop or leaving it alone for a while, the screen goes black like normal, but then no matter how much I mash the keyboard, touch the mouse, press the power button etc. the screen will not turn on. The power light is still on when this happens, so the computer is on. I've had to resort to holding the power button to restart every time.

The behavior only changed (and got even weirder) when I plugged my monitor into my laptop. Things worked normally until my laptop went into standby. This time the monitor woke up as normal, and my laptop screen became filled with colorful static. I'm able to use the computer as normal on the monitor, which is how I'm filing this report.

I should note that I installed routine updates yesterday through Software Updater, which is likely what triggered these issues. I also had a possibly related bug yesterday (after updating) where my laptop's fan stopped working. I restarted once and the fan still wouldn't turn on. I switched to my Windows partition and the fan started working. Then when I switched back to my Ubuntu partition the fan was working normally.

Update: I suspended my computer again. This time when I opened it the monitor worked, the laptop screen was black, and the mouse had completely disappeared.

The noise problem is already covered by bug 1958412 and bug 1958591. So this bug is now just about failing to wake from suspend.

Yes, bug 1958591 is the exact same bug, except that if my computer suspends without my monitor plugged in then the screen is black instead of noisy when I try to wake it up.

I have encountered this bug, and I have found it also occurs from "Dim Screen When Inactive".

Would you try these steps to confirm?

Steps to reproduce:

1. In: Settings > Power > Power Saving

2. Set "Dim Screen When Inactive" to "True"

3. Set "Blank Screen" to "1 minute"

4. Do nothing for 1 minute

5. After screen turns off completely, press any key

When the screen turns back on it is stuck.
