Also it is fairly common for some background jobs to still be running on shutdown. The system waits up to 90 seconds for those to complete. To see what they are you can usually press Escape.

Hi Daniel

Thank you for the prompt feedback. Unfortunately I do not really know
exactly what you're talking about.

When I do the shutdown feature, I see the proper shutdown prompts. But then
eventually my computer screen shuts off but my computer light on my power
button stays on. And I can still hear the hard drive spinning.

If I can say one thing that might help you guys. I think half of these
problems I'm having are your kernel. The standby feature not working
correctly, was fixed by someone else using a different kernel. Also the
blank screen function not working right can be fixed by a kernel downgrade.
I imagine this can too.

Hope that gives you some insight as to what's going on.

Hello

Thank you I ran the command this morning but it did not work I got a failed
message.

That I can reset the credentials by removing the file

So what happens is I shut down and I see the prompts of everything shutting
on down. Then the screen goes blank but my laptop light stays on. I tried
waiting 90 seconds for the proper shutdown of anything in the background
and nothing happened.

Reassigning to the kernel because GNOME has no control over shutdown other than the part where GNOME exits.

Hello Dan

Here's exactly what I'm experiencing during the shutdown. I tried what you
said, I pressed shut down in the graphical interface, I saw the regular
shutdown prompts. But then after that I can hear a partial shutdown of the
hard drive, but the power of light still remains on. I waited a minute or
two and nothing happened, so I press the power button down for 10 seconds.
Is this normal? If so could you please clarify what I can do.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Dan

Today I did the shutdown procedure in gnome. The prompts on the screen
shutting down all the processes went fine as far as I could tell.

But afterwards I noticed the screen was off but I could still see the power
light on my laptop lit. I thought it may be hung up by a process so I let
it sit for 10 minutes and when I came back the light was still on and the
screen was off as it was before.

So I can deduce that genome is shutting off the screen but some kernel
process is hanging up the system.

So when I do the shutdown procedure and this happens I have no choice but
to hold the button down for 10 seconds to force a shutdown. I'm afraid of
corrupting my journal by doing that.

Well that's the update for today.

Hello Dan

I send in the apport info this morning and I got emailed this afternoon
from your bot and it told me it to rerun it so I did it again

Today I observe something that may help you with this.

When I shut down my computer today with the updates. I noticed that the
screen eventually went black I didn't see any shutdown prompts. But then
afterwards the power light was still on but the screen was off.

I came back an hour later and I noticed the power light was still on. But I
did not hear the hard drive spinning in my laptop.

So I'm wondering if it's a setting in my BIOS that is causing this maybe
the fact I had to use legacy mode instead of UEFI mode.

It's a Dell computer so there's not a lot of options in the bios.

Hope that helps

Steve

Hello Dan

I have given this a lot of thought.

When I attempt to shut down in 22.04. the prompts that I see on the screen
are not the regular shutdown prompts that I saw in 20.04.

I remember when I did the shutdown in 20.04. the last prompt for the
shutdown procedure was telling all devices to power off. I have not seen
that with this 22.04 in the shutdown prompts, maybe that's the reason why
the power light stays on afterwards.

That or it's something to simply do with the bios.

Anyways that's just my thoughts.

Hi Dan

Just an update.

Did updates yesterday and did a shutdown and the fan and the power light
stay on and then I have to force a shutdown.

I'm on a Facebook group for support for Ubuntu Linux. Apparently there are
so many new users to the group and this bug existed in 20.04 but no one in
the group wants to share the fix with me so I have nothing to point you to.

Have a Merry Christmas

Steve

Hello Daniel

I did my updates today on my laptop and the shutdown worked properly today.
The power light went off as well. This bug is solved for me.

That would be kernel 5.15 which fixed it.
