Bug Description

When watching a TV channel that send DVB standard subtitles (not burned in to the picture) Me TV doesn't show subtitles.
When trying to select desired subtitle from a menu, the only option available is "subtitles disabled".

Yes, I had to temporarily remove subtitles because it was locking up the streamer. Not sure why but I'll definitely look into it shortly. Thanks for raising this.

Ok, I've had a stab at fixing this. Does anyone want to test it. I don't get subtitle streams in Australia.

Just tested 0.5.23 and subtitles are not working. I can select the right subtitles from the list but that's about it. No subtitles appear to be drawn to the screen. I've attached a log of me-tv to show what's happening. I don't know if it's the new version or what but also Channel browser seems to have stopped working after upgrading from 0.5.22 to 0.5.23. Epg still works just fine. Just wondering if there's a certain part in xine-lib that needs to be enabled for the subtitles to work?

some system data for diagnostics:

I'm running gentoo linux.
uname -a:
Linux t42gentoo 2.6.23-tuxonice-r10 #2 PREEMPT Sun Mar 2 13:31:05 EET 2008 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.70GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Yes, there is something that does need to be enabled in xine but I'm obviously not doing it right. Hopefully I can work that out for the next version.

The channel selector has been removed, it was just a sneak-peek feature. But most people didn't like and those that liked it thought that it needed a lot of improvement. In short, it was no use to anyone and caused a bit of button confusion. See https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/me-tv/+spec/easy-channel-change for a list of people's thoughts.

I think that I have a fix in revision 269. Is someone available for testing? Please email me.

I tested the subtitle fix you made in revision 269 of me-tv and it didn't work. But then I tested the latest revision (rev. 283) and I can confirm that the subtitles work just fine with that! Great work! :)

Thanks for testing this. I think that I was previously setting the wrong subtitle channel in libxine. I was setting it to 1 instead of 0.

no problem. Btw, I was reading me-tv blueprints and noticed that subtitles -blueprint mentions an automatic selection of subtitle pid (auto-pid). I always have to select subtitle stream manually to enable them so just wondering if the auto-pid is finished yet?

Michael Lamothe (lamothe-deactivatedaccount-deactivatedaccount) wrote :

Prior to version 0.5.X, Me TV only used the video and audio PID in the channels.conf however this information is available automatically from the DVB/MPEG 2 stream. The auto-pid blueprint specifically refers to the ability for Me TV to read all the PIDs automatically from the stream including subtitles, AC3, audio, video and teletext.

This is important because TV stations often change PIDs throughout the day in Australia and they need to be detected on-the-fly. Also, TV networks sometimes permanently switch PIDs. Without the auto-pid feature, subtitles would not be possible.

Thanks for your great work. I'm glad that you're taking an interest in the project. Please feel free to ask these questions any time you like.

I tested Me TV first time last week, compiling stable version 0.5.25. Everything seemed to work then, also Finnish subtitles. Today I compiled that again and subtitles are missing now, maybe because of latest changes. How can I get back revision (283 maybe?), that I used last week?

PS. I am quite a beginner.

ourasi, will continue offline because it's a question about bzr and is not useful to this bug log.
