LiveCD GUI won't start. ie I cannot install

Bug #194351 reported by Jason Jade Ward

linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 (Ubuntu)
Won't Fix

Bug Description

when I put my kubuntu LiveCD in my cd-rom it boots as normal and when I select the option to "Start or Install Kubuntu" the GUI won't start , kdm is initialised and I am left with a shell like this
ubuntu@ubuntu
If I start in safe mode my pc starts to beep like crazy and it gets scary.

I have a very new system which may be why it doesn't run:
Nvidia GeForce 8800GT
Asus P5N-T Deluxe, which is the Nvidia 780i motherboard
Intel Core 2 duo E6750

However if it was a driver problem of the linux kernel not supporting the hardware, here is an interesting thing.
I managed to install suse 10.2 perfectly. There was no trouble at all.

Did you try installing using the Alternate cd on the same system and did similar problems occur. And is it possible to paste parts of /var/log/syslog and /var/log/Xorg.o.log where it notes any problems that have occured? This way it might be possible to decide where the exact problem lies and if it's related to your hardware or some other factor.

I didn't try the alternate cd. However I decided to give it another shot at
installing.

I tried the normal install, and the load bar was working, and then another
two appeared and they stopped. Then the screen went black and my pc beeped
at me.
So I tried safe graphics mode and it worked. Odd though because previously
my pc beeped violently at me.

So it worked and I am sending you this mail on kubuntu through firefox
because Konquerer won't open gmail.

Thanks for the quick response and I wish all the developers good luck in
developing this awesum distro.

Regards
Jason

I've had the same problem trying to use the graphical installer with my GeForce 8800GT video card. I had the same problem with 7.10 and had to use the text-based installer. I'm disappointed that Ubuntu doesn't seem to recognize this popular card. I'd be happy to provide information about my hardware. btw, this is on the x64 version.

I solved this problem by searching on the net and I found this.

edit
/etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common
look in the file and add to the disabled modules part
"Disabled_Modules = nv nv-new"

But do this only when you have installed your Nvidia drivers.

Hope that helps

Hi,
Thankyou for this bug report.Upon testing on similar hardware I can confirm that this bug occurs.
I am setting this as a bug with the restricted drivers since that seems to be the issue.

Thank you for reporting this issue about a driver from the
linux-restricted-modules package. lrm-2.4.24 was shipped with Ubuntu
8.04 which reached end-of-life for desktop support on May 12th, 2011.

For that reason, this bug report is being closed at this time. I'm
marking it wontfix because what you describe is probably a valid issue,
but there are no plans to work on lrm 2.4.24 bugs further.

The issue may be resolved in a newer version. If not, aside from filing
a new bug report, another angle may be to file it directly with the
driver vendor.

Changed in linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 (Ubuntu):
status: Confirmed → Won't Fix
