Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Many a times I get this error box popping after logging into GDM .

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.

The last error message was:

Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in

I have to shutdown the machine twice or thrice & reboot it after which it doesn't come.

Reproducible :- Sometimes.

How to reproduce :- I have no idea. Going beyond that, no idea what or where to look to give more hints to the developers.

Version :- 2.21.91-0ubuntu2

Hi,

When this issue next hits you could you please open a terminal
and run

  ps aux | grep settings

and see if gnome-settings-daemon is running. If not can you run

  gnome-settings-daemon

and paste any output in to the bug report?

Thanks,

James

Could you please attach you ~/.xsession-errors next time you
experience this?

Thanks,

Thanks,

The critical part seems to be

parse error

There have been a couple of mentions of this, so it seems to be
affecting a few people.

I'll try and look in to the error later.

Thanks,

James

Is there a command I can run in a terminal to grab that info for you?
This is happening on a fujitsu laptop I am preparing for a friend. I can
cut and paste that info and send it to you.

Hi,

I don't know of the most convenient way, but if you could
get the output of

  lspci -vvnn

and then attach /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log that would
be great.

Thanks,

James

Launchpad needs a "multiple file uploader". This computer has dual Nvidia Quadro FX 1700 cards.

Although i had no idea that there would be an upgrade last night, I am still thankful the error has been resolved with the release. Thank you all!

UPDATE: Sorry to say, after this saturdays updates (03/08/2008) this bug has resurfaced itself. When the laptop powered on after all the updates were complete, this horrible error once again showed its ugly teeth.

Hello,

I still have the problem and set the bug to incomplete in hope my infos will be enough to fix it.

$ cat /etc/lsb-release

DISTRIB_CODENAME=intrepid
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 8.10"

$ ps aux | grep gnome-settings
dee 6052 0.0 0.0 162828 4024 ? Ss 07:37 0:00 /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon

$ glxinfo | grep OpenGL
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.1.8304 Release
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20

(I'm using the standard fglrx-driver from the repository.)

Attached you find a tar-file with ~/.xsessions-error, /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

My current solution: Even if the "gnome-settings-daemon" is started do

$ gnome-settings-daemon

in a terminal. Then it take a little time and the correct theme will be installed and everything works as it should.
