Bug Description

There was also no brightness setting. I have reinstalled ubuntu 3 times already. This happened after the updates on June 24th.
The only solution is not to install ubuntu updates. As soon as I install updates, there is a black screen.

Sounds like bug 1930733. Please look in your kernel log:

  journalctl -b0

or

  journalctl -b-1

to verify.

The version higher than 5.8.0.59 does not work. I also made commands under the root in this version today.
apt update
apt upgrade
But it still doesn't work.

5.8.0.25 works. Loading. I can't see a black screen and can adjust the brightness of the screen.

Maybe this will be important. The computer took a very long time to shut down before the crash. This is usually less than 5 seconds.

I will also add information that this happened in version 20.04 (I had it at the beginning). I thought the problem was in the version and first updated to 20.10. It did not help. Then I upgraded to version 21. It didn't help either.
I am currently using 20.10 version.

Thanks. This sounds like it might be a regression in the Intel kernel graphics driver "i915" in version 5.8.0-59 since that's probably what's driving your primary monitor, but the Bug Description also mentions that your Nvidia driver is broken for that kernel version:

nvidia, 460.80, 5.8.0-59-generic, x86_64: installed (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!) (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!) (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!)

Please try:

1. Uninstall the Nvidia driver.
2. Reboot.
3. Reinstall the Nvidia driver.
4. Reboot.

and tell us if the problem still happens.

I did according to this instruction.

Maybe I did what was wrong?
The screen is still black.
Can you write what commands to make?
I saw that the nvidia 460 drivers were installed. But the screen is all black.

Ideally a broken Nvidia driver shouldn't cause this problem, because I think it's usually the Intel GPU that's wired to the laptop display. So the problem might still be the Intel driver. To find out for sure, can you please uninstall the Nvidia driver and then reboot?

Please then also run:

  uname -a > uname.txt
  lspci -kv > lspci.txt

and attach the resulting text files here.

You didn't make any mistake. journal-2.txt and journal-3.txt are from the version that does not work.

> Should I choose 460?

If you need the Nvidia driver to use the machine then yes you can reinstall it. I only wanted it uninstalled in order to prove this bug is in the Intel driver.

Next please try logging into both 'Ubuntu' and 'Ubuntu on Wayland'. You can select which using the button in the bottom right corner of the login screen. Do either of those work with 5.8.0-59?

I cannot do this as I have a black screen and nothing.
This is not available in recovery mode.

Please don't boot into recovery mode while investigating this bug. Recovery mode is not relevant to the bug.

That said, Ubuntu 20.10 reaches end of life this month so upgrading to 21.04 should probably be the next step. That will also give you kernel version 5.11 which might hopefully work better...

OK, that's progress. Please open two new bugs to cover those issues:

 * Nvidia driver 460 fails in install on 21.04

 * Brightness control is missing on HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15-dk0xxx

Assuming the Intel GPU is wired to the laptop screen those are different bugs.
