Firefox-3.0 fails to start

Ubuntu 7.10, firefox-3.0 v 3.0~alpha8+nobinoonly-0ubuntu1

From launcher, simply fails to start. When I launch from a terminal window it issues the following:
Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9a8 and 1.9a8.

This started after a recent (02/12) update.

I think that it's due to last update of XULRunner-1.9.

It seems that either your xulrunner-1.9 is not matching your firefox-3.0 or that something is broken (missing or broken lib).

Please, show us:

so your firefox-3.0 is not up-to-date.
It is probably stuck by a dependency. Either try an apt-get dist-upgrade or force it using synaptic.
Then it should start.

Hi Fabien,
I did the upgrade as you suggested, but now the Firefox 2 is gone. The upgrade caused that I can run Firefox 3 now but Firefox 2 was upgraded to Firefox 3. So there is only one version of Firefox now and it is Firefox 3.

Is there any way to have both versions of Firefox installed together as it was before ?

Firefox 2 will soon be re-uploaded with a new name in universe: firefox-2

My version numbers are slightly different (and more lines).
I think the recent XUL-RUNNER update was probably the cause, but I'm not sure what to roll back.

David, your firefox-3.0* versions are not correct. They should be b3~cvs20080101t1000 matching xulrunner-1.9.
Please try a dist-upgrade.

this was a hick-up because of a missing Breaks in the xulrunner-1.9 control file. I fixes this in the latest xulrunner-1.9 update. to fix this, just upgrade everything to latest.

Happened again today (March 13th 2008). The GRE version numbers are 1.9b3 and 1.9b3. I'll try to get xulrunner and Firefox 3b3 version numbers consistent and see what happens. Having to use Ff-2.....

Yes, that was it - the xulrunner updated before Firefox. Now they're compatible again it's all fine.

Still, it's a curious failure message. Does it mean anything to someone? Logically there ARE no version numbers between 1.9b3 and 1.9b3.......
