You have disabled the graphics drivers with the 'nomodeset' kernel parameter. Please remove that from /etc/default/grub and then run:

  sudo update-grub

and reboot. If then problem persists after that then please open a new bug.

affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → ubuntu
Changed in ubuntu:
status: New → Invalid

Thank you Daniel.
I had tried removing nomodeset. But then after booting I was getting a
black screen. Couldn't get into tty display also.
I ended up replacing Ubuntu Mate with Linux Mint.

Thanks for your help!

I understand sometimes 'nomodeset' is required as a workaround. That's why it exists. However, when 'nomodeset' is used the kernel effectively removes all hardware support for the Intel driver and others.

If you want finer control of the option you can instead use amdgpu.modeset=0 or radeon.modeset=0 which should avoid disabling the Intel GPU.
