Variety's message appears as hex. Appears 0xFFFF length

I just installed variety set the parameters. When variety goes up, the message is displayed in hex inside a box . One value on the top of the box and one below.

Any idea, other than turn the message off, to correct it?

The text in "Correct Pic." decodes to

It seems that for whatever reason there is a problem or misconfiguration with the font for displaying.
