Shell crashed during upgrade from Eoan to Focal

Bug Description

I was testing an upgrade from eoan to focal via `update-manager -d -c` and at some point during the upgrade I got a blank screen with flashing cursor.

In the journal [1] I can see:

Apr 23 17:28:06 marcustomlinson gnome-shell[1421]: GNOME Shell crashed with signal 11
Apr 23 17:28:06 marcustomlinson gnome-shell[1421]: == Stack trace for context 0x556cbbb1e340 ==
Apr 23 17:28:06 marcustomlinson gnome-shell[1421]: st_label_set_text: assertion 'text != NULL' failed

Forgot to mention, the crash occurred in thread 1.
