Bug Description

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

Steps to reproduce:
open system-config-printer.py 0.7.75
click "New Printer"
Choose "Internet Printing Protocol"
Enter the IP of the printer in the field labeled "Host:"
At this point, the "Forward" button is disabled, so the only choice is to click "Find Queue..."
A new window comes up that says "Scanning..." and sits there indefinitely.

Trying multiple times, I was unable to set up my printer this way.

However, going another route, I was able to configure my printer:
click "New Printer"
choose "Other" (instead of IPP, which is what i'm still going to be using anyways)
enter "ipp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" for the URI
continue through the rest of the steps selecting printer make/model/driver
The printer is successfully set up and a test page can be printed now.

So why does this program require me to "Find Queue" (whatever that means, I already know the IP), when that step is obviously not even necessary when choosing the alternate route?
And why does it hang and never give a result?

Is this related to bug 184159? There remote IPP detection fails because of problems with reverse DNS lookup.

Hi Henrik,
I don't think this bug is related. When I tried this, I was directly entering the IP of the printer(which should not involve DNS lookups AFAIK), and it fails in this case.

I had the same issue today as well. Using "Other" works fine with the full URI, but "IPP" doesn't let me do anything, either when using the IP address or hostname of the printer.

Network printing not working in karmic is not a secondary issue!
It's a regression, everything was fine in 9.04.

I tried this again in 11.04. It looks like the interface has changed a bit since this bug was entered

There is a field labeled "Queue:" with the default value of "/printers/" in it.

It seems the "Verify..." and "Forward" buttons are disabled unless you change this default value. Changing it to anything else enables the "Verify..." and "Forward" buttons. This seems a little bit strange behavior to me, but I was at least able to use this screen once I realized that.

My printer seems to ignore the value for "Queue" anyways. I can leave it blank or write "/crap/" in it and it sets up fine either way.

In Oneiric the interface has changed again. The menu entry for IPP printers now only allows entering the full URI. If the printer is not one of the auto-detected network printers (wait until the animated circle at the lower left of the window disappears), try "Find network printer" and enter hostname or IP of the printer (or hostname or IP of a remote CUPS server), and let it be searched. If the entered host is a printer or CUPS server, the possibilities to connect to it are listed under "Connections" below. On network printers usually JetDirect/Socket works best.

Please try and tell here whether this solves your problems.
