Bug Description

Hi,

After an upgrade this morning, the following things are not working:
- Earlier the Application key brought up something called "Activities", which happens now via ApplicationA or SuperA, the microsoft key
- I can not find and search for extensions in the "Software" application. There are just a few addons/extensions, gstreamer ones, fonts and some input
- any attempt at removing an installed extension results in a "you have no permission" error, without asking for a password. Apparently gnome-shell is crashing in the background, i'll attach logs if the tool does not.
- The Tweak app shows a warning triangle next to the "Dash to panel" extension, by clicking on it the "Extension" thing starts up which shows nothing.
- If I install the dash-to-panel extension from a package the top bar does not appears properly, the icons, workplace switcher etc all crumpled into the top left corne,r overlapping each other, thus being mostly unusable.

I think that the extensions are not yet upgraded to gnome-shell 3.35, but I have no way to check it. I also have no trivial way to downgrade gnome shell to 3.34.

Please advise.

Thanks,

tg

I never just update one package. I always update them all.

Extensions are pretty badly buggy for me on Focal. Some work, but many don't, and won't upgrade, can't be configured, and don't give any information about why they have failed.

If I go to https://extensions.gnome.org/, the installed extensions page tells me that there are extensions like gsconnect and night-light-slider have an unspecified error but that they can be upgraded, but when I tell them to upgrade I just get another unspecified error and when I refresh the page, it says again that I can upgrade them. Both those extensions do apparently have 3.36 versions - I just can't upgrade them.

Likewise, trying to install these extensions from git doesn't work. I still get an error but with no indication what it is.

The new gnome-shell Extensions application doesn't show any extensiosn unless I use the On/Off button to disable and then re-enable them. Then it shows some extensions, but not all, and some of the manually installed ones appear in the Built-In section.

None of the configuration/settings windows work, whether I try to launch them from gnome-tweaks, https://extensions.gnome.org/, or the new gnome-shell Extensions application.

Coverflow-alt-tab is just broken in X11 (but works in Wayland) - see https://github.com/dmo60/CoverflowAltTab/issues/117.

There are some errors in journalctl -e, such as this one:

JS ERROR: Error: Wrong type number; string expected: _updateState@resource:///org/gnome/shell/extensionPrefs/main.js:706:9

I read somewhere that the configuration/settings windows not working is a known issue in 3.35, so I'm looking forward to 3.36 arriving in Focal and hopefully fixing some of these things.

This bug is diverging in a few too many directions. Although we should have a single tracking bug for all the extensions that don't yet work in 3.36, this is not yet it...

Gipz: from the list of issues mentioned in the bug description please choose one to focus on. Alternatively, if you would just like to track all of the broken extensions then please list them.

Everyone else: Please do not comment here for now.

I know we're not supposed to comment on this bug, but this is just to quickly note that almost all of the issues I noted in comment #7 have disappeared now in gnome-shell 3.36.0-2ubuntu1.

Thanks Rocko.

Gipsz, please update your system:

  sudo apt update
  sudo apt full-upgrade

and then reboot. Then tell us which one (if any) of the issues you mentioned you would like this bug to be about.

Hi,

Upgrading was not an option, the broken system was removed, but I did
a full os upgrade, and the "bundled" extensions seems to work.

I filed another report via the crash detector, it seems that
additional packages are needed to configure the extensions.

Also a bunch of extensions are not available for 3.36, but that's
someone else's job.

Thanks for the followup, and for the work.

Thanks for the reply. This sounds somewhat inconclusive, though it does sound like things are not "badly" broken now.

I suggest we close this bug and then any additional issues found going forward should get their own separate new bugs, by running:

  ubuntu-bug gnome-shell

Changed in gnome-shell (Ubuntu):

Agreed on the close, the main issue, the disorganisation of the
packages to the level of unusability is fixed.

A separate report for the missing dependency was filed.

I hereby exhort the extension developers to step up their game with
the upgrades, but they are not listening and I cant ask anyone to do a
favor that's all we can do with this bug :)

tg
