Bug Description

Binary package hint: kcontrol

Bug for kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon:

Whenever I log into KDE I have always to select screensaver and set power save for monitor in preferences. If I don't do that screensaver is not automatically started after 8 minutes of inactivity. I don't know why because when I set preferences the screensaver is set. However, the power save for the monitor is always unset :-¿?

Moreover, when I resume after a suspend sometimes screensaver and power saving work, sometimes not (and I have to reset preferences again). Please, could you give a solution for this problem. I know this a minor bug, but it is terribly annoying (I simply can't trust in my computer). Thanks a lot in advance! Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated.

This bug remains in kubuntu hardy heron. Is there somebody assigned to this bug? I simply can't believe this bug remains unsolved. Maybe if the preferences are stored in a hidden file? :-)

I wonder if somehow the settings file has become owned by someone else (e.g. root).

I'm not sure which file contains the settings, but if you can run the command (in your home directory, as yourself) 'find . -user root' or 'find . -not -user $USER' (without the single quotes), you can check if this is the case.

Voilà!

jcamen@hermes:~$ find . -user root -print
./.kde/share/config/kcmartsrc
./.kde/share/config/kcmmidirc
./.rnd
./0
./.texmf-config
jcamen@hermes:~$ find . -not -user jcamen -print
./.kde/share/config/kcmartsrc
./.kde/share/config/kcmmidirc
./.rnd
./0
./.texmf-config

So, as you can see, the preferences file is not owned by root. In fact, screensaver settings are saved. The only thing I have aalllwaayss to set is the monitor savings settings. I have no idea why :-¿?

So it seems the problem is really only with power saving not working. I will edit the title accordingly, if you don't mind. (If I'm mistaken, please edit the title back. See also bug 40571 that states that screensavers only work when power saving is set.)

(For power saving, I only have the options 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15 etc. minutes available. I assume the 8 minutes only what you use for the screensaver?)

Are you currently using Gutsy? For the power saving, what monitor, graphics card and XORG driver are you using? I'm not sure I can help here, but perhaps the information may help someone who can.

Also, please attach the file '/var/log/Xorg.0.log', there may be something about the power management.

Yes, I think this is related to bug 40571: screensaver don't work until I set preferences in monitor power savings. The fact is that the power savings preferences are not "remembered". By the way, the screensaver is set after 8 minutes of inactivity, monitor is set to power off at 25 minutes.

Regarding your questions:

+ I don't mind that you edit the title.
+ I am currently using hardy heron (latest kubuntu release) updated today (july 31st)
+ I use a laptop: Dell Latitude D820, TFT 15' monitor and nVidia card G72M [GeForce Go 7400]. I'm using the propietary (nvidia) driver.

$ dpkg -l *nvidia* | grep ^ii
ii nvidia-glx-new 169.12+2.6.24.13-19.45 NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x/X.Org 'new' driver
ii nvidia-kernel-common 20051028+1ubuntu8 NVIDIA binary kernel module common files

and current xorg packages in hardy heron (8.04).

I also attach Xorg.0.log file.

I begin my vacation today, so I can't attend the e-mail (no Internet connection in vacation) until the last week of august. Thanks a lot and sorry for the inconveniences.

I see nothing special in the Xorg.0.log.

Perhaps someone will look at this report later and think of a possible cause for the bug.

Enjoy your vacation. :-)

Does this still occur in KDE 4.1?
