Bug Description

I freshly installed Ubuntu Budgie 19.10 today after receiving my new notebook. However, when putting the system to suspend (or hibernate), the screen goes off and the system freezes. The fan keeps running, keyboard backlight and power led are on. Sometimes, when pressing a button, I can get the screen to turn back on, but its frozen as well (no mouse movement, clock stuck etc.)

So far I tried increasing the swap file size, however this did not help. I also livebooted Ubuntu 19.10 and tried suspend, but I had the same issue.

Could this be a problem of my fairly new chipset (Intel i7 1065G7)?

I uploaded an apport report as requested from the automatic mail. However, the report was created before I tried to suspend the system, because once the system is frozen, I obviously cant create an error report.

Iulian Blajut (azbuky) wrote :

I am experiencing the same issue with a clean minimal install of Ubuntu 19.10 on an Acer SF314-57

It seems the suspend mode defaults to s2idle which is causing the problem. After switching to deep, suspend works correctly and the system does not hang anymore.

The issue seems similar to what users experience in [[https://askubuntu.com/questions/1029474/ubuntu-18-04-dell-xps13-9370-no-longer-suspends-on-lid-close/1036122#1036122|this ask ubuntu thread]]

I too have an Acer Swift 3 314-57 with Core i5 and an NVMe 512GB disk. I too see the problem reported here and elsewhere on the net about things going for a toss when you suspend.
The laptop does not wake up from suspend, the screen stays dark, the keyboard hangs (does not respond to the key combination for keyboard backlight change) and the only way out is to press & hold power button until it shuts down.

I tried the mainline kernel v5.4 as mentioned by Kai-Heng Feng in comment #20. No difference in behaviour. Any attempt to suspend still hangs the laptop like earlier.

Sry, I kinda always forgot to update you guys.

The mainline kernel 5.4 did nothing for me as well. However, switching to deep suspend as suggested by Iulian Blajut did work for me.

Maybe a potential workaround, until the real reason why s2idle does not work is found, could be to enable deep suspend by default for the affected systems/chipsets.

s2idle should work. Can you please give v5.5-rc1 a try?

My laptop already has /sys/power/mem_sleep as "deep" and it still hangs when I suspend. This is on the 5.4 mainline kernel.
Norbert, did you have luck with "deep" with 5.4 or vanilla 19.10 kernel?

Also tried with 5.3 kernel that shipped with 19.10 and I see only "deep" in /sys/power/mem_sleep.

@Kedar No, I only tried this with a vanila 19.10 kernel.

cat /sys/power/mem_sleep
s2idle [deep]

Do you mean you don't even get the s2idle option when you run the command or was deep selected by default?

@Kai-Heng I will try 5.5 Kernel on the weekend and will get back to you.

BTW, how do you make codeblocks in this forum?

@Norbert

The "deep" mem_sleep approach works for me. I also downgraded to vanialla 19.10 kernel before trying this. Not sure if it also works with 5.4 kernel. Will try this weekend.

Earlier I was making a mistake in writing "deep" into mem_sleep. Just sudo echo deep > /sys/power/mem_sleep does not work. I had to get a superuser shell by "sudo su" first and then do the rest. After correcting this, the laptop works perfectly and I am super happy with this sweet machine.

WIll also try the 5.5rc1 kernel this weekend & report back.

As said before, after switching to deep suspend it was working.

Due too homeschooling, I unfortunately had to install Windows on my machine :( , so I can't give you an update how it's working with 20.10.

I did have Ubuntu 20.04 installed, but it did not bring any improvements to the issue. As soon as I can become a full time Linux user again, imma install Ubuntu and update you guys.

What I forgot to add, with Windows the notebook sometimes does not want to go to sleep. It turns the screen off, but stays running in idle (keyboard light is on, fan is slightly audible). It did this right after I installed Windows and all necessary drivers, but before I even installed a single program.

Even now, it happens about every other time I want to suspend the notebook. Maybe there's something wrong with the chipset of this model. Acer support was not able to help me.

Reporting after a long time, but the s2idle=deep does not really fix anything. Just made it less frequent if at all. Since then I have upgraded to 20.04 and the issue is there.
I have essentially given up on using any kind of power management on this laptop under Ubuntu.
