Bug Description

When running the Nextcloud Client (flatpak or PPA) in Eoan Beta, its app indicator icon is never displayed in the notification area. Other apps sch as Steam and Skype have their indicator icons displayed fine.

Not only Enpass is affected.

Try killall nextcloud and restart

It seems to affect app with indicators that are autostarted

Same problem on the fresh released Fedora 33, GNOME desktop on Wayland. I think this is a Wayland related issue.

Same problem here, after upgrade from Ubuntu 20.04 to 20.10, nexcloud app indicator in top bar disappeared.
I "killall nexcloud" and restart as per comment #3 above and icon reappear, until next reboot!

Turn off "launch on system startup" in general settings, then add Nextcloud desktop sync client to startup applications of the system. This works for me in Ubuntu 20.04.

I found a solution: install TopIcons Plus gnome plugin. Plug address: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1031/topicons/

After installing the plug-in, these software can display the icon after booting. I assume this a problem caused by the gnome api?
Ubuntu 20.04/20.10

I am using X.org.

The workaround mentioned by Xianglong Kong does not work :/ I am using the Nextcloud client, too but it already is in the startup applications list.

TopIcons Plus works for me.

I also found out that there has been a pull request in the package https://github.com/ubuntu/gnome-shell-extension-appindicator/pull/231/files trying to fix this. That didn't work.

This looks like a timing issue related to the recent changes in the U20.04.01.
A simple fix which works for me is to delay the start of NextCloud for several seconds (5 in my case), by adding
X-GNOME-Autostart-Delay=5
to the ~/.config/autostart/Nextcloud.desktop file.

I can confirm the same issue with Ubuntu 20.04 and the Nextcloud client 3.1.3-20210218.151938.3842d306f-1.0~focal1. It appeared after the update from version 33-1 to 33.1-0ubuntu0.20.04.1.

It does not appear when I manuyll downgrade to 33-1.

The issue has been confirmed and fixed already upstream, see this github issue:

https://github.com/ubuntu/gnome-shell-extension-appindicator/pull/260

Is there a way to update to either update the latest version or backport the fix?

Most probably these bugs are also related / have the same rootcause:
