gnome-terminal starts, but shows no window when launched from SSH

Bug Description

I am starting gnome-terminal on the command line (SSH). It displays nothing and does not show the terminal window. This is a v-server using VNC and Ubuntu 19.

Oh, also the windowless gnome-terminal process never exits until I press Ctrl+C.

Edit 2: $DISPLAY is correctly set to :1 (VNC). Other GUI programs start fine.

I think gnome-terminal has other odd dependencies like it needs to receive information about the login session and bus before it is willing to display. For this reason I would recommend 'xterm' instead if you need a working shell via ssh.
