Bug Description

I recently installed Ubuntu 19.04 on this protab laptop. In the settings menu the sound output shows a headphone and a multichannel output option. There is no sound coming out of either system, despite there being sound detection demonstrated in the sound bars in the output menu moving with the playback audio. I have tried force restarting/reinstalling Alsa mixer and pulse audio and all the obvious things such as checking sound level settings.

the issue is probably not from the UI but from pulseaudio/alsa/kernel

affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) → linux (Ubuntu)

The audio on your machine is Intel ASoC audio, it is not Intel HDA audio. you need to add ucm conf files specific to this machine:

git clone git://git.alsa-project.org/alsa-lib.git
cd alsa-lib
backup all contents in the folder of /usr/share/alsa/ucm/
sudo cp -rf src/conf/ucm/bytcht-es8316* /usr/share/alsa/ucm/
reboot
#check if audio works

To restore to original state:
restore all contents in the folder of /usr/share/alsa/ucm
reboot.

Hello Hui, I followed the steps you outlined, but my laptop still isn't playing sound.

Then we need to debug pulseaudio, I guess the pulseaudio meet some errors when initializing this sound card according to ucm, to do so:

edit /etc/pulse/client.conf
add a line: extra-arguments = -vvvv --log-target=file:/tmp/a.txt
reboot and upload the a.txt to lp.

Adrian Barbuio (oiubrab) wrote :

Adding this line to the conf file does not generate the a.txt file on startup. I tried adding the line, altering the line with the extra arguments tags and adding to the extra arguments variable

The client_3.conf should work, put this file to /etc/pulse/client.conf
reboot
check if there is /tmp/a.txt

if there isn't, please run 'ps -aux | grep pulseaudio" to check if pulseaudio is running.

Again, I have followed the instructions here. There is no a.txt file in the tmp folder. It seems like pulseaudio is running.

Did you install the timidity? it can't work well with pulseaudio.

dpkg --list | grep timidity*

sudo dpkg -r timidity
sudo dpkg -r timidity-daemon

reboot

No, I haven't installed timidity. It seems to be that the drivers for this laptop do not exist

But according to logs of #5 and #16, the driver works fine.
card 0: Audio [Intel HDMI/DP LPE Audio]
card 1: bytchtes8316 [bytcht-es8316]

2 card(s) available.

    index: 1

 driver: <module-alsa-card.c>

I think the problem is the UCM and pulseaudio. I don't know why your pulseaudio can't generate the /tmp/a.txt
