Bug Description

Was on 4.20, booted fine (with the boot option ivrs_ioapic[32]=00:14.0)

Tried to boot 5.2.3 (but I believe this happened on 5.1.X too)

It will boot to a certain extent, it does my disk password, i can see everything say "ok" when i do no quiet splash. But where it should go to the login screen I just see a single cursor

Setting nomodeset lets me boot, looking at logs:

Seems maybe something to do with "failed to write reg 1a6f4 wait reg 1a706" but unsure how to fix it

I think I fixed this myself!

I downloaded the latest drivers from amd

https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-amdgpu-unified-navi-linux

extracted them all

ran

 sudo ./amdgpu-pro-install

and it seemed to work!

Covers all 5.2.x kernels up to 5.2.5. No video, no KB response. But system runs. Can ssh into it. Runs fine on kernels up to 5.1.21.

FWIW, I seem to have the same problem after upgrading to Xubuntu 19.10 RC from ubuntu 19.04 today (Kernel 5.3.0), using a Thinkpad X395 (AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 3500U APU). The system seems to boot fine up to the login screen, but after login, the screen goes blank and the system apparently freezes. Setting 'nomodeset' on boot makes the problem disappear.

Using Thinkpad T495s with Ryzen 3500U, on Ubuntu Budgie 18.04.

After upgrading to Kernel 5.3, I ran into black screen at login and general system instability, and lots of "failed to write reg ... wait reg ..." in dmesg. No issues when booting to Kernel 5.0.

Seems like there are several amdgpu firmeware upgrades in the past few week (https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/log/). Followed these instructions (source: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Ubuntu-19.10-Radeon-RX-5700):

git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git
cd linux-firmware/
sudo cp -va amdgpu/ /lib/firmware/
sudo update-initramfs -u
reboot

After that, and I'm no longer seeing "failed to write reg ... wait reg ..." in dmesg, and system is generally more stable.

I ran into the same problem too. However, after following the suggestion by Soedarsono (Comment #7) a few days ago, the system seems stable & I experience no more blank screens since then.

I am facing the same issue with ThinkPad-T495 5.3.0-26-generic (ubuntu 18.04). I have seen a subtle nuance to the issue. I can successfully boot every time I am powered on. But this issue only occurs when I am on battery.

I tried the suggestion by Soedarsono (Comment #7) but the situation has not improved, unfortunately.
I got the following warnings.

"
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.3.0-26-generic
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/vega20_ta.bin for module amdgpu
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/navi10_mes.bin for module amdgpu
"

Could this be a problem?
