Bug Description

Peter (expat), Computer Support Technician of <email address hidden>
(http://www.protonic.com) said this was a bug in Ubuntu 7.10. See answer below.

My question:
I have tried to install and reinstall and remove and reinstall again computertemp
(computertemp.berlios.de/) on two installs of Ubuntu 7.10 and get this error message every time: "E: firehol: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1"

Every time it installs it says it is installed but with the error message. I am trying to locate computertemp on my Ubuntu.

I am a newbie to linux and don't even know how to find computertemp in the files like I can with windows.

Jim
  Answer:
Hello Jim,

Thank you for visiting protonic.com! My name is Peter and I will be assisting you with your question.

This looks like a very nice program, I had not heard of it before. Sadly it has only been updated to support Feisty Fawn and you are running Gutsy Gibbon where there is a known bug which prevents the program from running. The last program update was in April 2007 which was well before Gutsy was released. There seems no solution for the bug as well. Perhaps the best path is to keep an eye on the program website and install a new release when it is announced.

Thanks for visiting protonic.com!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in computertemp.

I have tried the package thing and everytime I get not such package. I am a
newbie and don't understand Linux or Ubuntu language. Hopefully if I don't
find a package someone there will put it into the right package. I don't
think there is a computertemp package per se. I also thought that the
person from Protonic knows much more about this thing than I do. That's why
I went to him for help and included his response in the message. He helps
people with these kinds of things more than I.

There is an ubuntu package called computertemp in gutsy (ubuntu 7.10) - previous versions did not have this package yet

what version of ubuntu are you using ? (type lsb_release -a in a terminal or look at System->About Ubuntu)

If you are using Ubuntu Gutsy then you should be able to install the computertemp package

it might be that the universe repository is not activated (go to System->Administration->Software Sources and verify that the (universe) checkbox has been checked

Actually I found computertemp on my 7.10 Ubuntu, but it would not install. That's why I am reporting this bug as Peter said it was a bug. I also tried to install the download from the internet but it would not install but gave the above error message. "E: firehol: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1"
Universe is checked.

Hello,

If you read carefully the error message, you'll find out that the problem is caused by package "firehol".
Remove firehol (sudo apt-get remove firehol) and then do "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install computertemp"

That should make computertemo installable.

I checked the internet about firehol since I am a newbie and understand it is an important piece of software. I would like to get others opinion about this issue before removing firehol. Anyway right not my computer temperature is not as important as things like a firewall.

Right now you don't have firehol installed. That's the problem. Firehol
was not correctly installed (maybe a bug) so you can not install any
other package until the problem with firehol is fixed.

Easiest way to fix that is removing firehol, and try to install it
again.

Anyway, you don't have firehol installed.

And this should be marked as not a bug, at least not in computertemp
package.

Hi jhmac77,

I'm closing this bug on your request and as we don't have enough information to determine what the exact problem was/is.

Looking at the error message you posted it is likely that something went wrong with the installation of firehol and apt-get or synaptic is retrying the install each time you use them.
As Adolfo suggested it may be worth trying to remove and reinstall firehol if you want to keep using it (it is not installed by default in ubuntu)
This can be done by doing a :
     sudo apt-get purge firehol
     sudo apt-get install firehol

it may be that firehol installation prompted for an answer if it did not find /etc/init.d/firehol from an earlier installation. (default action results in an error -> action N needed to select new conf file) -- see bug 137430
typical log : Setting up firehol (1.231-7) ... Configuration file `/etc/init.d/firehol' ==> Deleted (by you or by a script) since installation. ==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version. What would you like to do about it ? Your options are: Y or I : install the package maintainer's version N or O : keep your currently-installed version D : show the differences between the versions Z : background this process to examine the situation The default action is to keep your current version. *** firehol (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ? *** firehol (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ? n update-rc.d: /etc/init.d/firehol: file does not exist dpkg: error processing firehol (--configure): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

You can also raise problems you are having in the support tracker at [WWW] https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs.
Another good source of information are the ubuntu forums at http://ubuntuforums.org

Hi,

Firehol is quite a complex & powerful firewalling program, I would be surprised if a new Linux user would be able to administer it. (It is Command Line Only, no graphical interface).

Yes, the problem here, was that at some point you tried to install firehol, and for some reason that failed. (There are a whole raft of reasons that it may have failed.)

You need to sort out the failed install thats basically, confusing your computer, before you can install anything else.

To do this, open a terminal, and enter the following command:
apt-get purge firehol

That should completely remove firehol from your system. After that, you should be able to install computertemp.

I hope that helps,

Johnathon
