Hardy Heron Alpha unable to boot in Virtual PC 2007

Windows Vista Enterprise 32 bit
Virtual PC 2007 6.0.156.0

Kubuntu Hard Heron Alpha 3 CD

System is unable to boot.
Virtual PC stops with "An unrecoverable processor error has been encountered. The virtual machine will now reset"
If the system is booted without the quiet and splash flags the last thing the kernel says is:
[ 48.469254] SMP alternatives: swithing to UP code

Yes the problem persists in Alpha4. If I give the VM more than ~750MB of RAM
VPC doesn't error all the time but the kernel locks at the same point. I
suspect VPC is actually the difference when I swap the amount of memory as
it won't actually capture in Alt-PrintScreen so perhaps a read herring.

Just want to "second" this bug. Happens with both the Desktop beta 1 and Alternate beta 1 ISOs.

Ok, scratch that.

By changing the boot parameters by adding vga=771 before the double dash, I was able to get into the alternate installer.

I am running Vista Enterprise and wanted to install Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS in Virtual PC 2007. The problem persists with this version whether you try to boot from Live CD or an upgrade from Gutsy Gibbon. I haven't tried adding vga=771 to the boot parameter. I'll try that on Monday.

Upgraded from Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04. I have the same behavior when booting with Kernal 2.6.24-16 but 2.6.22-14 works great.

First time install - not an upgrade - can't run live from CD.

Same problem - "An unrecoverable processor error has occurred", etc. - Attempting install from ubunto-8.04-desktop-i386.iso, downloaded today (5/10/08). Will not run Check CD either. Attempted options noted before - vga=771 - noapic nolapic - nothing works.

This is reproducible. I am continuing testing and will advise if I find anything else.

I previously attempted 7.10 install, but that did not work due to the VPC PS/2 emulation issue.
I thought my problem was a SATA/AHCI issue, but I just spent the afternoon playing with BIOS Legacy Mode to no avail.

Any ideas? Thanks.

boot the recovery mode with kernel parameter---> noreplace-paravirt

after the boot:

1) add noreplace-paravirt in menu.lst grub file as a kernel parameter

2)the audio won't go so add
snd-sb16
into
/etc/modules

3) add the lines in yellow in the image attachment into the xorg.conf

I followed Simone Crescenzo's steps and still receive the same "An unrecoverable processor error has been encountered The virutal machine will reset now.", just much earlier in the process. In fact start up looks like this:

Starting up...

Then Virtual PC croaks.

I can go into the Grub menu and choose kernel 2.6.22-14-generic and it works fine.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Both .24 and .26 used to run just fine on VirtualPC, with noreplace-paravirt and blacklisting s3fb.
.27 now dies after "HugeTLB registered 4 MB page size, pre-allocated 0 pages" with the unrecoverable processor error message, I can take a screenshot if needed.
VirtualPC was really handy, I can't stand the way vmware clutters up my windows laptop. However, respect to the kernel team for daring to switch kernel in FF ;-)
