Bug Description

Binary package hint: superkaramba-kde4

When I try to run some themes with superkaramba-kde4, I get this message:
SuperKaramba cannot continue to run this theme. One or more of the required components of the Kross scripting architecture is not installed. Please consult this theme's documentation and install the necessary Kross components.
It happens with commonly used themes, like liquid weather, that work fine with the superkaramba for kde3.
Could it be a problem related with some dependencies that have not been included in the kde4 package?

Yes, they are related.

You need to install kdebase for KDE4 to get the necessary Kross components.
Unfortunately, Kubuntu doesn't seem to include them for now.

A work around is to start SuperKaramba from a terminal and use the '--usefallback' switch.

Superkarama depends on the krosslibraries for python/ruby themes (i.e. kdebindings), I think it should have a runtime check and give a somewhat more meaningful error messages.

What happens in 4.1RC1 is that superkaramba applets do not get added into the widget list

How do you get it to work in intrepid?

I just tried to run liquid weather in the released 64-bit intrepid and I got precisely the error listed in this bug report

What I did:
  download liquid weather
selected "install new widget" (selected the superkaramba option)
now liquid weather appears in my list of plasmoids
tried to add the liquid weather to my desktop
  got this message:

SuperKaramba cannot continue to run this theme. One or more of the required components of the Kross scripting architecture is not installed. Please consult this theme's documentation and install the necessary Kross components.

Note: using KDE 4.1.3, from "Unsupported updates" (as described here: http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.1.3 )

I believe this problem can be solved via installing of a/some missed package(s)? Which one(s)?

I can confirm this issue still happens in Intrepid. I have the latest kubuntu updates installed, as well as libkrossruby0 and libkrosspython0. I still get the Kross components error when trying to load liquid weather 15.0 from superkaramba.
I initially wanted to run lwp as a plasmoid desktop widget, but when I tried to get the desktop widget to load the lwp.theme file, it reports nothing and does nothing. So I tried to get lwp to run in superkaramba, and get the kross error.

I am seeing the same problem with KDE4.2 RC1 installed.

Harald I would like to know what you have installed to get this to work as it seems for a number of us there is something wrong.

I am assuming that everything is working but a dependency is not installed that you have installed.

David Taylor (me-davidandrewtaylor) wrote :

As noted above I have installed KDEUtils & KDEBindings (I'm sure if they are necessary they should be dependencies of Superkaramba) then rebooted and tried again.

The whole screen went black! A little dialogue appeared in the middle of the screen that said you do not have PYQT installed that is necessary for this program to run but I already have the package python-qt3 installed so I am still stuck without Liquid-Weather. This may be related to bug 318815 where Python plasmoids don't run either.

Make sure you have libkrosspython0 installed.

Mythor: does it update? I finally got it to install (IIRC I had to log out and back in after installing the kross stuff), but it never updated, so I uninstalled it since it was effectively useless.

David Taylor (me-davidandrewtaylor) wrote :

Yes Mythor, I have libkrosspython0 installed, all the same if these extra packages are required then the packaging dependency structure should have handled all this rather than us having to play guess the dependency games. I shall be building a virtual fresh install tomorrow to test a number of bugs so I shall test this with it and see where I get. N7DR - Hopefully this will get resolved completely soon enough as even though there are a number of weather native plasmoids out there now they are less featured and just plain ugly (If you manage to get Yawp compiled and installed (why doesn't he offer it in a plasma bundle as I'm sure most wouldn't want to install 100 meg of packages just to get a 30Kb program compiled and installed) it is reasonably attractived if you shrink it down to half its size other wise it is just huge).

I shall get back tomorrow at some point when I have made up a fresh build.

Ok, on a fresh install (updated & Upgraded) of Intrepid:

I installed Superkaramba (revealed no dipendencies) and complained it needed Kross.
I installed the libkrosspython0 package (also revealed no dipendencies) it failed so I rebooted the virtual machine.
I am back at the needing PyQT missing but isn't bit.

Close but no cigar.

Strange indeed, so there are likely missing dependencies, on my system the following PyQT stuff is installed,

python-qt4-common 4.4.4-2ubuntu3 Shared files for PyQt4

as well as

python-kde3 3.16.1-1ubuntu2 KDE3 bindings for Python

I have checked and all Mythor's suggestions are installed except the versions of the mentioned packages are older versions but are as what comes as default with Intrepid Ibex. Not too worry I'm not that concerned about it but still would like to point out that there are definitely incomplete dependencies with the packages.
