Strange problem, when I reinstall the kernel 5.0.0-16 it works now.

When I turn on and off the wifi several times, sometimes the bluetooth does not work anymore.

The problem only seems partially solved.

The problem persists with the v5.2-rc4 kernel. The bluetooth does not work and I could not activate the wifi either, it's even worse... It is even more serious than with the kernel 5.0.0-16 with which bluetooth works from time to time, but not often. Wifi is all ready ok on kernel 5.0.0-16.

With 5.2-rc4 kernel the apparent management of the CPU temperature is catastrophic, my software indicated 98 ° C and the fans did not turn on ;(

Unless it's a bug with incorrect temperature display, kernel 5.2 RC4 is dangerous for my laptop...

Please in the future do not ask me to test a kernel that seems to potentially damage my laptop.

Yes the problem is present on kernel 5.0.0-15 => bluetooth does not work, wifi is ok.

kernel 5.0.0-16 => bluetooth works by intermitance, wifi is ok.

kernel 5.2 => nothing works

I dont now is my problem of temperature is in relation with powertop software (by Intel, to get low cpu temperature and low fan ventilation) in version 2.9 ?? I start automatically this software on my laptop at system boot by cron.d fonction.

The last version of powertop is 2.10 but is it not disponible on the software repertory. If you add powertop v.2.10, I'm ok to test it with kernels 5.0.0-15 & 5.0-16 and to try to resolve the problem of overheating.

You play too much to the sorcerer's apprentices.

I do not want stability and functionality, not always problems, that's why my workstation is under Debian 9.x now.

To be honest with you, I wait for the release of Debian 10 to migrate my laptop too.

My V300 Epson scanner not worked on Ubuntu fom +/- 18 months after changes from your part in kernel. You've changed where the proprietary drivers are installed and you have not anticipated/corrected this problem creating aliases or coming back. The idea of change the Linux Kernel in this way in Ubuntu is very not serious on my eyes...

@phil995511, for iwlwifi, could you have a try with backport-iwlwifi-dkms from https://code.launchpad.net/~canonical-hwe-team/+archive/ubuntu/pc-oem-dkms ? This should be working on 4.x/5.x kernels you have. Please make sure the corresponding dkms module has being compiled and installed with `dkms status` command. If not, please do `sudo dkms install backport-iwlwifi/7858 -k $(uname -r)` to (re-)install it and paste error logs and dmesg if any thing wrong.

For bluetooth, I need you to completely power off your laptop and capture the dmesg log when booted at the first time. This will trigger bluetooth driver to try reloading bluetooth firmware, and then we will be able to know what's missing.

WiFi/Bluetooth just works with all above kernel versions.

So far the conclusion we may have should be:

* For bluetooth, please check bug 1835449, which would update bluetooth firmware to REL0329, and it should be working all the time for you,

* For wifi, since the firmware blob is already up to date, I guess we'll need a device of the same model to be able to diagnose more.

Hello,

First, I have tested Debian 10 (with out firmware packages) on my Dell XPS 9570 :

If I add the Intel drivers :

https://www.intel.fr/content/www/fr/fr/support/articles/000005511/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html

All run perfectly.

If I test the Debian 10 Unofficial non-free images (including firmware packages) :

https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/

The driver in use seems not to be the same as the one I tested above but it also works.

Test to integrate the driver : https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/_media/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-34.618819.0.tgz

And inform me so that I test it.

I will try to answer your 2 messages from 04.07 & 05.07.2019 tonight when I have more time.

Best regards.

@phil995511, from your log in comment #35, I think that has the same result with my comment #30 because 1) wifi seems to work perfectly, and 2) Bluetooth "request failed to create LE connection: status 0x0c" takes firmware update in bug 1835449.

As for your dmesg log in comment #36 in regard to backport-iwlwifi-dkms, I don't think you're really using iwlwifi dkms module because there is no version info printed in dmesg. To make sure that, try `dkms status` and see if backport-iwlwifi has been listed as installed for current running kernel version.

By the way, I also noticed following error messages about tsc clocksource:

  clocksource: timekeeping watchdog on CPU6: Marking clocksource 'tsc' as unstable because the skew is too large:
  clocksource: 'hpet' wd_now: 1ea65be5 wd_last: 1e28da7d mask: ffffffff
  clocksource: 'tsc' cs_now: 172ded8864 cs_last: 16ea6ab29a mask: ffffffffffffffff
  tsc: Marking TSC unstable due to clocksource watchdog
  TSC found unstable after boot, most likely due to broken BIOS. Use 'tsc=unstable'.

It's a known issue that we're tracking, and as it suggested, currently the only solution is to add 'tsc=unstable' to kernel boot parameters. Would you mind attaching `cat /proc/cpuinfo` so that we may add a record to the affected CPU models list?

This means it's not correctly installed. Please re-run `sudo dkms install backport-iwlwifi/7858 -k 4.18.0-25-generic` and `sudo dkms install backport-iwlwifi/7858 -k 5.0.0-20-generic` to reinstall them. I run it with a " /etc/cron.d " command :

SHELL=/bin/sh

@reboot root powertop --auto-tune

it would even be desirable for it to be directly associated with the kernel and enabled by default on all the Intel CPUs of laptop see workstation also ...

@phil995511, bug 1830961 fails recent kernel build, so v5.2 is not available. And, actually backport-iwlwifi-dkms has all the mandatory changes to enable iwlwifi devices, while mainline kernel may not. So I would still recommend you to use backport-iwlwifi-dkms instead.

Hello You-Sheng Yang,

Thank you for your work.

Problem solved with the last kernel 5.0.0-23

I hope than the software "powertop" disponible on v 2.10 (https://01.org/powertop/) are soon compiled for Ubuntu...

Best regards.

Philippe

Close as INVALID for the fix is already released at least in 5.0.0-23, though I cannot reproduce this with all the kernel versions listed in comment #30.

Changed in linux (Ubuntu):
status: Confirmed → Invalid
