Bug Description

Budgie desktop seems to crash every time I attempt to launch the budgie desktop settings. Attempting to launch the settings from clicking the icon and from command line yield the same result(s). I was actually able to launch and use the settings a couple of times before this issue started occurring.

What is your UB version?

Have you recently installed/removed any software such as Nautilus?

I am currently running Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS.
I did recently remove the default ubuntu desktop environment as I just installed the budgie desktop and want to clear up some space but Nautilus is still installed.

and what is the error when you run

    budgie-desktop-settings

from the command line?

The command line does not show any error(s) or messages when executing the command but the desktop crashed and came back up really quickly.

sounds like you have removed more than you think you have.

Try reinstalling budgie desktop

    sudo apt install --reinstall budgie-desktop budgie-core libbudgietheme0 libraven0 libbudgie-plugin0

reboot --

just tried reinstalling with the command you have provided, no avail. This time running the budgie desktop settings actually restarted the desktop and kicked me out to the login screen.

I need to know exactly what you did to remove the original ubuntu desktop environment. Budgie shares many components with the default environment and uninstalling something it needs will cause crashes such as you are observing.

gotcha and makes sense.
I basically ran the commands:

sudo apt-get remove --purge gdm*

I also ran:

sudo apt purge ubuntu-desktop -y && sudo apt autoremove -y && sudo apt autoclean

but it did not do/remove anything.

Please ensure you install budgie-desktop-environment

Un's meta package ubuntu-budgie-desktop is also recommended

budgie-desktop-environment is already the newest version (0.9.9ubuntu1).

ubuntu-budgie-desktop is already the newest version (0.32).

purging gdm* also removed ubuntu-desktop - so you wouldnt be able to run the second sequence of commands.

anyway - I followed your instructions on a fresh ubuntu iso fully upgraded - installed ubuntu-budgie-desktop and then purged gdm3 and ubuntu-desktop.

budgie-desktop-settings started successfully - tested logout/reboot as well.

So sorry - it must be something else that you have removed at some point.

Please can you make it crash again.

Wait for a few minutes then type the following to sent the logs to launchpad

apport-collect 1830070

unfortunately nothing there that is obvious.

If you first type "dmesg"

Then make it crash

Then type "dmesg" again - is there any new error messages reported?
