Bug Description

My Lenovo ideapad 330 laptop with Ubuntu 18.04 sounds works fine initially. However, when I close it down (to sleep) and then return, all the sound disappears. The only way to get back the sound is to restart the laptop. The issue seem to start after a recent automatic update.

I can see a few audio-related error messages in your kernel log. But even if that wasn't true then I would still suggest this is most likely a kernel bug.

In case the problem happens to be pulseaudio crashing, please follow these instructions first:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses#Missing_a_crash_report_or_having_a_.crash_attachment

If you couldn't find any evidence of 'pulseaudio' crashing in the past then please try some slightly older (or newer) kernels and tell us if you find some that don't have the bug:

This happens on the grounds that the PC rests with the speakers handicapped and the earphones controlled on. To keep this from happening separate the earphones before putting the machine to rest.

Please refer to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1826868. Looks like this is a similar bug with that one. They all have geminilake hdmi audio controller.

Yes bug 1826868 sounds similar.

In this bug the error is:

[ 2601.990141] snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC0D2: Unable to sync register 0x2f0d00. -5

Launching with the Kernel 4.15.0.47.50 v4.15.0-47.50 resolves the issue. The more recent kernel (above this one) has the issue. Seems the more recent kernel introduces some bug that needs to be fixed.

no longer affects: alsa-driver (Ubuntu)
no longer affects: pulseaudio (Ubuntu)

I backported an i915 patch for glk machines, please remove the workaround of "probe_mask=1" (#4) and test this kernel:

sudo dpkg -i linux-imgae-unsigned-xxx.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-modules-xxx.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-modules-extra-xxx.deb

reboot and choose the new installed kernel to boot, then redo the test.
