Bug Description

Mouse cursor left freezed copy of itself over all the windows after login after lock screen. Functionality is not broken. It's just not aesthetic.

Thank you for your bug report. What desktop environment do you use? Could you take a screenshot or screencast showing the issue?

GNOME. From the latest Ubuntu release (19.04).

I tried to capture it by screenshot. But freezed cursor is not shown on it. So I attach a photo. Freezed cursor is on the bottom left.

My bug got marked a duplicate of this one but with the latest change that might be wrong: It affected me on a machine with AMD graphics, not nVidia. BTW I recently tried it again on the offchance it had been fixed since (by re-enabling the xrandr scaling setting), and it had not. Also not fixed on 19.10 (which tbh is barely advanced from 19.04 at this stage).

On the flipside, a different machine with only Intel graphics (Dell XPS 9370) did *not* show this problem.

A bit more detail to reproduce this that I think was missed out before:

It happens when the configured desktop mode/scaling is set to a fractional value. You can have that experimental xrandr setting set, but be configured to scaling of 100% or 200% (but see below on latter) and you won't see this problem. Set it to 150%, log out, log in again, you should see it. That applies to my experience anyway on the AMD graphics system.

NB: Today when I tried to confirm this, I found that it would ignore my setting scaling to 200% on login, and would instead go in as if it was 100%, which would also be what it showed in the display settings dialogue itself. I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case earlier. I am able to select and use 200% in the session, it just won't be remembered. This sounds like a separate problem though. The problem *here* is what happens when scaling is set to a fractional value like 150% (which it does seem to have no problem remembering).

It also means that a kind of workaround is to set scaling to 200% or 100% before logging out, then set it back to the 150% you want after logging in again. The problem is only when you're logging in and the setting is already fractional, so the switch in resolution happens during login.

I am experiencing this after upgrading to 19.10 and enabling fractional scaling on wayland. The extra cursor appears at 125%/150% scaling and disappears at 100% scaling.

Also FWIW it also happens with amdgpu so I think it's probably mutter and not nvidia

Another with this problem here.
I have Radeon HD 7850 - no nvidia - also scaling at 125%.
Unscaled is OK.

Both X11 and Wayland.
Unscaled works fine. Hope this get resolved soon. Thanks.

I'm also having this issue on 19.04. Only happens when i'm using 2 screens. the cursor is a duplicate of the real one, ie it hanges to the text select cursor shape when i'm highlighting text, and it changes to the hand-pointer when hovering over a hyperlink.

the duplicate goes away if i disconnect and reconnect one monitor.

I should note I have updated my graphics drivers using this ppa: ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers - before i did this, there was an unusable stuttering mess of many cursors, again, only present when using 2 displays.

Has this bug been re-added somewhere? If so, could someone post a link? I'm experiencing a dead cursor appearing in Ubuntu 19.10. I always run my monitors at 100% scaling and have dual monitors. I am also running an AMD RX Vega 56. I've been running in Wayland. I haven't seen if the issue occurs on X11 or not.

I am also having this issue on Fedora 31, Gnome 3.34.4 with a Radeon RX 590 using amdgpu on Wayland.

Video attached. Unsure how to replicate other than after locking.

(I appreciate this is an Ubuntu bug tracker, but it's the same issue.)

My workaround for removing the frozen pointer is going to displays in settings/devices config and select mirror screen. It is not necessary to complete the change, just revert back to the previous configuration.

Having this problem in 20.04

GPU: AMD RX 5700XT
Fractional Scaling: 175%
Display: 4k Asus MG28UQ

Also, I can "workaround" it by moving the cursor to the bottom right, so it will be hidden there.
But then on Pressing F11 (for fullscreen in Firefox / Youtube) the auto hidden dock will reveal constantly and there will be a loss of performance, like if it is in a continuous loop
