Hardy Heron Alpha 3 from Gutsy - No System Sounds

Similar to previous post 178308, but with newer kernel.
Upgraded from 7.10 via dist-upgrade. Basically sound works - when testing in Sound applet, with applications, just not with System Sounds.
Checking all the dumbsh*t stuff - volume, muting, file selected - no dice.
Removed the .asoundrc* files - no dice

Sorry for the delayed response. Care to try installing the latest linux-backports-modules package? It has an updated version of ALSA (version 1.0.16-rc1). Thanks.

I'm having the same issue. I downloaded:
linux-backports-modules-hardy
linux-backports-modules-generic
linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-8-generic

none of them did a thing.

I can play the .wav sounds, but none of them play when I log in or do anything and when I'm in preference, they don't work there either.

How do I undo what I just did, those things I installed made things worse. I totally removed them, but the glitches are still there.
