Thank you for your bug report. What session do you use? Could you add your journalctl log after getting the issue?

I have seen this bug reported elsewhere too, but can't find it.

I can only imagine this might be caused by suspend/resume crashing the gnome-shell process, and then it restarts (almost seamlessly) with a slightly different config.

Please run this command before and after suspend/resume:

  pidof gnome-shell

Do you find it gives a different answer after wakeup? If so then please follow these instructions:

This bug also started affecting me since a couple of weeks ago. Gnome shell extensions appear as switched on in gnome tweak but they are actually disabled. I noticed the bug appear more or less randomly after recovery from suspend or even from black screen. Resuming from black screen the shell theme appears as reverted back to default in the login screen. Also the ubuntu-dock appear in the login screen.

I tested pidof gnome-shell before and after the bug occurrence but the answer is the same. Please find attached two screenshots of login screen before and after bug occurrence. After the bug occurrence the dock is visible in the login screen.

I think I have the same bug;
- dock is visible in the login screen
- after login the dock jumps around on mouseover
- attempting to lock the screen will make the UI unresponsive and the window with the lock option will get blurry

Looking for a workaround...

do you have that SRU installed, https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock/63ubuntu1.18.10.2 ? It should resolve the dock on login screen issue and could well resolve the other problems. it would also be good to know if those having the problem use extensiosn and which ones

Reply to #7:
I thought the bug has been patched with the last update since I didn't encounter it yesterday. However, it reappeared today.
PID (while functioning normally): 3012 2655
I had rebooted after this and didn't check the PID. The bug reappeared today and report PID: 2856 2503
Alt+F2 -> r <Enter> did not changed the PID.

Div,

Please do that again, but without rebooting.

We need to check if the numbers are changing during the same boot before and after the bug occurs. If they do change without rebooting then the next steps are:

In a response on this thread

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1039694/18-04-appindicators-disappear-after-every-reboot/1067237#1067237

it is suggested that

"The issue is caused by an old Unity app-indicator which is in the system autostart. Remove it with sudo apt remove indicator-application and reboot."

I did not want to mess up the system, so I did not try it before confirming. But is it possible that this is the cause and the suggestion is a viable fix?

killall -3 gnome-shell

Is the workaround I am currently using.
I'm not using any non-default extensions.
indicator-application is not installed.

pidof gnome-shell && killall -3 gnome-shell && sleep 10 && pidof gnome-shell
4493 1132
4758 1132

elatllat, that request was for Div mainly. But also please don't use any 'kill' commands between 'pidof' commands because it makes that test useless.

I didn't encountered the bug any more in the last 7 days. It could have been fixed by some ubuntu updates (at least on my system).

OK. If it was a crash triggering this problem then the problem may come and go. And moreso for some people than others.

Per the original reporter in comment #20 this bug is being marked as fixed. Anyone else experiencing problems still please open a new bug by running:
