Thank you for your bug report, but if as you pointed out the disk has an issue then that's not the software fault...

I tried the installation again. It worked. The first time I selected to
update Ubuntu and install 3d party software while Ubuntu was installing.
Second time I did not select those options and it worked. I'm not sure if
it indeed the hard drive. Instead of using an external hard drive I used my
internal HDD which has many more bad sectirs and yet it worked. It
definitely appears to be an issue with these ticking off these options.
