Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring-manager

There should be some way to store the password's keyring access so that you don't have to type it every time. This is particulary annoying when your machine access to Internet via WiFi. Every time you turn on your Linux you need to type the key to let the application access the keyring. This equals typing the WiFi key, which is one of the tasks that gnome-keyring-manager pretends you to avoid,

Thank you for your bug. The issue is not really clearly described. What version of Ubuntu do you use? Is the problem specific to gnome-keyring-manager which is an application or to the gnome-keyring? Looks like your issue is that you have to enter a password to unblock the keyring, since gutsy it should be automatically unlock if you log from gdm and use the same password for the login and the user keyring. That doesn't work with automatic login though which is a know issue. Could you precise exactly what configuration you are using, what happens and what else you would expect?

Thank you for your response. The problem was in Ubuntu 7.10. This was not in my PC, but my mother's. To ease the use at maximum I had configured the system with automatical login. According to you, because of that, the gnome-keyring-manager asked her a password to unblock the keyring.
I solved this following your supposals: deactivating automatical login and using the same password for both user and keyring.
Now she has to type her user/pass but there are not annoying windows once logged in.
So, you were supposing right "That doesn't work with automatic login though which is a know issue"
Thank you.

Sebastien,

So what is the work around when using automatic login? Browsing various forums, the best I've seen seems to require pam-keyring-tool which doesn't appear to be in any ubuntu packages for gutsy, only for feisty. Please advise what is the best workaround?

Thanks!

I'm in need of that very answer too! When doing auto-logon, the keyring manager pops up asking for a password (it's the same password used for logging on) - so the ease of autologon is completely undone.

I have the same problem. I already have full disk encryption, I want to enter just one password and then I want my laptop to boot straight to the desktop and connect to WiFi. I do NOT want to have to enter any other passwords. Otherwise I will just return to using unencrypted wireless.

I feel like I am being nannied by the developers, and I DO NOT LIKE IT.

This bug really needs to be fixed. Being asked for a password every time I use automatic login in order to be able to access my wireless connection is quite annoying.

If this isn't fixed it makes autologin completely useless on a computer with a wireless network.

I agree, this is annoying. I have to log in after hibernating even tho I have selected auto logging in and then enter my keyring manager password to connect to wifi. It's bugging me! There must be a fix but I cannot find one. Keyring manager code-writers: help us out!

If you change your keyring password and leave it blank, it will stop asking for it. I'd like if this was more obvious, but it does work.

*This* is the sort of problem Canonical should be working on...

Not making it easy for Windows users to switch (new Ubuntu 8). People will
switch on their OWN if the system just works.

My 2 cents.

I'm afraid that you don't understand that the Ubuntu developers don't owe you anything. Only you have the obligation to fix a bug.
