Bug Description

Something keeps crashing, when I use my computer.

I have a fresh Kubuntu 7.10 installation.

I get this error:
The application unknown (nspluginviewer) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV)

When I selcet Backtrace in KDE Crash Helper, I get this:
This backtrace appears to be of no use.
This is probably because your packages are built in a way which prevents creation of proper backtraces, or the stack frame was seriously corrupted in the crash.

This bug is easy to reproduce -- just surf for auctions on ebay. Within one minute, you will "crash".

I just fired up my laptop, which has kubuntu 7.04. Surfing ebay is no problem using that machine. I am thinking of going back to 7.04 on one of my desktops (home and day job) to see whether the problem goes away. I agree.

I just installed kubuntu 7.04 on this desktop, and no more crashes. So the problem seems to be in 7.10. Unless this problem gets fixed suddenly, I will move my other desktop to 7.04 ASAP. (I am going on a trip, so ASAP will be in a couple of weeks.)

I can confirm this error on two different computers running Kubuntu Gutsy 7.10. One computer was upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy while the other was a fresh install.

The problem seems to arise when both flash-nonfree and konqueror-nsplugins are installed. The error pops up (for me) every time I shut down the computer, close Konqueror or visit/leave a flash-embedded web-site. At the same time as giving crash-promts, flash works in neither Opera nor Konqueror, but fine in Firefox. Firefox is also error-message free.

Trying to install 'swf-player' will break that particular package AND make Adept suggest removing 99 packages including Amarok, Firefox, Audacity, nvidia-glx and OpenOffice.org. I do not know if this is related.

Hi.

I just made an upgrade (friday night) which included a lot of KDE upgrades, and since then
nspluginviewer, used from konqueror, keep on crashing each time I try to view a flash
enabled webpage (either for videos or simple ads: phoronix, youtube, etc.). This is perfectly
reproductible.

Firefox does not produce these crashes although it frequently makes it impossible to have
sound output from videos.

Here is the backtrace for a crash for nspluginviewer launched from within konqueror:

I can confirm most of the above on a fairly fresh upgrade from feisty to gutsy on a thinkpad t60 running 2.6.22-14-generic. I have little useful info to add to the thread, but to reiterate briefly:
- I have installed flash 9 for linux.
- konqueror will not show flash embeds in pages that it previously did
- konqy will emit the crash notice on leaving flash-embedded pages, but in my case will not crash completely - just leaves the crash notice and the other tabs remain active. All the backtraces are quite similar, except for the offsets. the last part of a typical one is shown below.
- firefox works fine with this flash player
- opera does not.
- konqy does not.
- current plugins include:
   - real player
   - vlc plugin
   - shockwave (.swf player)
   - futuresplash (.spl player)
- I will try to remove various other plugins to see if there is a conflicting interaction.
- haven't tried to back down to older flash player as I need the current one for work.
- love konqy (primary browser) and hope this gets resolved soon.
- if you need me to write to Macromedia to bug them, let me know :)

Thanks to Gero, I installed the same older version of the flash player and I can confirm that it no longer crashes and it can play all the pages (so far) that it needs to. See above for my config.

The archive that you need to download is a large (~75MB) archive:
<http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp9_archive.zip>
that contains all sub-versions for all platforms for that version. The r48 linux version is contained in a tar file contained in the large zip file.

brunello: You shouldn't need to download the r48 plugin manually from Adobe as r48 is the version of the flashplugin-nonfree package. Just install the package flashplugin-nonfree in Synaptic Package Manager or via the command sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
