Looks like a bug in the toolkit FreeCAD uses for text rendering.

Hello James,

Judging by "FreeCAD 17 Beta", it sounds like you're using the FreeCAD snap, which was uploaded by a community member and then abandoned; it's from June 2016 and FreeCAD 0.17 was actually released April 6th, 2018. *I don't recommend using it at all*.

I filed a name dispute for the snap on October 28th, 2018 so the community could regain control of the official 'freecad' snap, but I never heard anything back. Checking my snapcraft.io login, it looks like I now control the 'freecad' name and was never notified of the outcome of the dispute, but I don't expect I'll have time to work on snap terribly soon, since we're preparing for a 0.18 release.

In the meantime, I suggest either using the FreeCAD Stable PPA (https://launchpad.net/~freecad-maintainers/+archive/ubuntu/freecad-stable) or grabbing one of the Appimages from our Github page (https://github.com/freecad/freecad/releases). Since 0.18 mostly contains bugfixes and UX improvements, and is now in a feature freeze, I'd suggest giving it a try if you're feeling adventurous.

Thanks for the notification.
I'm a happy user of FreeCAD and was shocked at the screen display under
Ubuntu 18.10 and a bit worried about what was going on.

I'll try and use the link you provided for update.

I don't know how Ubuntu got that version into their 'Ubuntu software'
listing but it sounds like a big error as it will discourage people new to
FreeCAD, as it has a friend of mine.

I noticed that 0.16 was about 100 Mbytes and 0.17 jumped to 200+ Mbytes
which made me think some MAJOR change was involved. I don't understand
what 'snap' involves other than some vague idea that it somehow packages
(duplicates ?!!) the libraries that are on the system, which really doesn't
make sense to me at all ... I mean shouldn't an OS package have libraries
appropriate to the hardware for the system? At least that is the best
guess I have for doubling of the installation size.

I'm a retired electircal engineer and did a lot of work with embedded
systems (small ones) so the mammoth size of current systems and the
dizzying array of acronyms is a bit overwhelming.

Thank you for your response and all the best with 0.18 and if there
is anything I can do to help, in my own limited way, feel free to ask.

James
