I read through that thread. Not sure if there is much more I can add now. When I restart the computer it comes back but this has happened a few times before. Someone mentioned thunderbird i was using that. A screen dimming app. Ill post again if i notice anything.

Philip,

Please run 'gnome-tweaks' and try enabling the extension under "Extensions".

I'm seeing this same issue. The dock disappears after the machine turns off the monitor after 5 minutes of inactivity. I don't have hibernate or suspend enabled. Per Daniel's suggestion, I ran gnome-tweaks and enabled the Ubuntu Dock extension...

Other symptoms - the dock reappears after logging out and logging back in (without rebooting). Reboot has the same effect. Dmesg had these items:

Hi,

I had the issue today and thanks to @v2min I can replicate it.

The issue appeared cause I have my screen turned off when I powered on the computer.

My specs:
 Ubuntu 18.10
AMD R9 290 with default kernel driver (amdgpu)

I had to reboot cause when I logging out, the current session hang and open a new session (ctrl+alt+f2) doesn't resolve the issue.

If more infos or logs needed just ask.

I havn't had this error again since I reported it, but what your saying
makes sense. I'm pretty sure my screen was turned off as well and I have a
AMD RX580, and had to reboot a bunch of times when the system locks up (not
sure how related but hasnt happened in a while).

I tried turning on my computer with the screen off. The dock loaded but i
got this error

That crash looks unrelated. And generally anything about your graphics driver is unrelated to this bug.

Are you saying the bug went away when you disabled extensions?

No i mean i havnt got this bug again since i reported it. I installed gnometweaks and the extentions were already set to enabled.

It happened again today. I put the computer to sleep. Turned off the TV. Started it next morning. Turned on TV. And the dock isn't here.

Same here. Everytime I resume my session after lock, I lose the Dock. Reenabling the extension in Tweaks didn't do anything. Dock still is gone.

I'm now seeing this issue, after messing with my monitor cables. I only have a single monitor. I was trying to get my DVI to work on my AMD RX550 card - which will not display while logged in (but does at bios).

Both cables are currently plugged into the same monitor (diff ports of course) in my attempt to switch from HDMI to DVI-D.

My ubuntu session was active in 18.04.1, and I only replugged the DVI cable and wiggled the HDMI cable.

Also, I have no customizations to the OS generally. I am using the OS video driver for amd.

Could those having the issue give a description of how/when they get the dock missing and also attach their journalctl log after getting the problem? Also describe the extensions you are using and the session yoiu logged in (default, wayland, GNOME...)

I had this problem with a fresh install of Ubuntu Mate 18.10 on a 2008 white Macbook, 2.4 GHz. dual-booting with MacOS 10.6.8, using rEFInd. I have never seen the menu bar of Ubuntu Mate on this install, it was absent on the first boot.

I've tried many of the solutions suggested here and in other threads, to no avail. I was able to sort of "fix" it by switching from gdm to lightdm, which gives me a minimal but functional window manager, allowing me (among other things) to connect to a WiFi network.

This bug hasn't been addressed and is obviously still an issue. Why was it allowed to expire?

I have a relatively clean 18.04 install, and it's happening to me too.

I can get the dock back with alt-f2-r to restart the gnome shell, so I have a workaround for now. But this is obviously an issue.

OK, I've attached the requested info from my system. It goes back 4 days, so it should include the period when it stopped working. Unfortunately I can't tell you exactly when that was - having the dock autohide means it's pretty much hidden until I need it.

I can't see any reason for the dock going permanently missing in that log. It might be a good idea if anyone experiencing this problem opens a new bug with all the required attachments, by running:

  ubuntu-bug gnome-shell

which will do it automatically.
