After performing software package upgrade, including kernel upgrade on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, the touchpad no longer functions. The device does not appear in /proc/bus/input/devices

Daniel, please make sure you have updated to the latest kernel in 16.04.5, which should be 4.15. The kernel that you are running is still 4.13 (4.13.0-45-generic to be exact).
