User Switcher temporarily stalls

Bug Description

When I click the user switcher applet, it takes anywhere from thirty seconds to a minute to appear. During that time, my mouse cursor is still movable, but keyboard and mouse button/wheel input does not appear to be read, though ctrl+alt+backspace will kill the session. Subsequent clicks of the applet after waiting through the first appear instantly and do not exhibit this problem, but the screen darkening effect will sometimes be instantaneous or darken over a few seconds in large increments.

Ubuntu 7.10 (i386 / Desktop)
Intel Core2Duo / 2GB DDR2
GeForce 7900GT (non-free driver version 100.14.19)
