It actually took me a while to upgrade to 18.04, now i can't do anything on my laptop.

It also happens when you type the wrong password and again login it shows black screen and cursor. I guess its a bug and they will fix in next update.

I understand, but I can't log in to my desktop... when I try to open a document I receive this error "Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused
(gedit:18948): Gtk-Warning **: cannot open display"

Maybe it's the hardware fault. Try reinstalling ubuntu see if it helps.

Thanks for all that.

My first guess is about your CPU model:

  Intel® Core™ i3-380M Processor

That makes me think you might be hitting bug 1727356. Can you please try the workaround in bug 1727356?

Although I might be wrong about bug bug 1727356 here. Your CPU is newer than other people experiencing that.

Maybe see bug 1779476 instead. What happens if you wait a few minutes? Does it eventually come up?

And what happens if you wiggle the mouse while waiting? Does it come up sooner?
