Freezes on switching back from second login

using latest gdm3 (3.28.2-ubuntu1.2), reproducable:

1. log in (autologin)
2. switch to 2nd user
3. switch back to 1st user
logs in and displays, but mouse cursor and keyboard frozen, can't switch to vt

tried with both nouveau and nvidia driver.

Changed to lightdm and switching between users works fine

Downgraded to those 6 .28.0-0ubuntu1 packages and rebooted: both user switching (black screen, unresponsive computer at 1st attempt at going to user switch screen) and hibernate resume failed.
Reverting to lightdm and all those function again

I have the same (or similar) problem.
To resolve the freezing of most of the gui applications, I have to repeat the logoff-login operation, pressing the shortkey-combinations CTRL + ALT + F1, and the problem seems to disapere.
