Bug Description

I was running ubuntu 17.10 for months with no issues. After upgrading to 18.04, closing the lid regularly (but not always) results in either:
1. The display staying on with a frozen lock-screen, or
2. The display powered off, but the notebook still powered on.

In both cases the notebook does not respond. A five-second press of the power button to hard-reboot the computer is the only means of recovery.

After powering the notebook back on, there are no files in /var/crash.

O'h I forgot to mention it. After experiencing this problem, I tried a fresh install. This did not resolve the issue.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.17 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

The issue started after upgrading from Ubuntu 17.10 to 18.04LTS. I did
not note the kernel version before upgrading, but it would have been the
default accomodating 17.10. I kept the notebook up to date, and I did
not have any reason to change to a non-default kernel.

I will try this and let you know what I find.

Will do if I no longer see the problem for a week.

Will do if the problem reproduces in a week.

Will do.

You too. Will get back to you on this.

After using the latest v4.17 kernel, I can confirm that the problem does
not appear to surface.

Can you see if the fix was already sent to upstream table by testing the latest upstream stable 4.15 kernel:

Hi Joseph,

I've been on 4.15.18 upstream stable for three weeks now, and the problem seems to be gone. When will the Ubuntu kernel have the fixes incorporated so that I can I switch back from the upstream stable kernel?

Pieter
