Ubuntu server 18.04 can not prepare partitions on a used LVM install of 16.04 server

Bug Description
Scenario:
I have a home server with 16.04 server install in LVM (the default) partitioned drive. I try to install 18.04 server a fresh over the existing install after backing up all the dat I want to keep.
ISSUE:
18.04 curtin installer throws out an issue saying it can't deal with the block device sda2
STEPS:
1. install Ubuntu Server 16.04 with the following setup LVM /boot / swap /home
2. transfer the iso to usb pendrive via ddrescue -d -D --force /path/to/iso /path/to/drive
3. reboot the server with the pendrive in place
4. Boot from the pendrive.
5. set language to English
6. Keyboard layout to English UK
7. Setup static ip address
8. Select drive to wipe using whole drive
9. Start adding details of initial user
10. Error is flagged from curtin block device. (see images attached)
Hi Dave,
This bug should be resolved in trunk. We've had a few bugs related to clearing LVM devices from previous installs. The initial fix in Bug 1764602 helped but didn't fully resolve the issue and results in the error that you see. In fixing subsequent side-effect bugs Bug 1768893 and Bug 1769742 I believe we've resolved this particular trace.
We're preparing a curtin SRU Bug 1772044 which can be picked up by a daily build of the installer.
